Here is a very geeky and techy article on how CAN bud thefts are occurring.
https://kentindell.github.io/2023/04/03/can-injection/
I’m not particularly tech minded at all but essentially thieves have worked a new angle to steal high end vehicles and work around other tech systems. On a separate security related closed forum high net vehicles were being taken in London using this method and one poster who was a security installer strongly advised against systems such as Ghost immobilisers.
Slight disclosure - I’ve advised on Security for many years now and regardless of whatever new Gucci countermeasure comes along there will ALWAYS be someone smart enough (and/or with inside knowledge) to defeat it. Quite often as soon as an OCG has this new tactic it’s then sold on the dark web to other OCG’s (money is money).
So for now and evermore the ‘Standing Advice’ is:
1. Layer defences to whatever asset you want to protect. When I teach courses I use a Medieval Castle as an example. Asset in the centre-multiple layers in between. When criminals/threat actors are in the planning phase of their cycle they will assess how easy that asset is to steal. More layers=more time=more chance of being detected and caught. If your car will take 30 mins to pinch and another one they have identified will take 10 then guess which one they go for (unless yours has specific value to them)?
2. Mix up your defences. Have some tech but also 100% have physical layers. Basically make your asset a pain in the ar5e to steal.
3. Don’t make your defences a pain in the ar5e to set up!! If it’s too complex and time intensive then that increases the chance of you not bothering and this is where good old Mr Murphy pays you a visit. I laboriously made sure all my cars were
Locked and nothing ever happened. The ONE time I forgot to lock one, that was the night a local druggie came round trying car doors and mine was open….he took a few bits but lesson learned. Make it a habitual muscle memory and don’t chin it off ‘just this once’.
4. Use ‘Quick Wins’ that cost nothing. If you have keyless access get a faraday pouch or just put them in a metal tin/container. Makes me laugh all the IG ads for these very nice looking (ie expensive) signal blocking pouches when you can achieve the same for free. Block your car in with another car or object. To pinch your car they have to move that car etc etc.
Turn your front wheels full lock-this disrupts wheel thefts, park as close to a solid object as possible so they cannot get down the side of the car.
5. Do NOT rely on CCTV. I call this a ‘false prophet’ and unless you are constantly monitoring it then you will miss things. With my druggie thief I have lovely footage of a masked scrote going through my car that I can replay again and again. Most thieves are forensically aware.
Happy to post more or answer questions and hope this helps!
