DIY MAF wiring
DIY MAF wiring
Hi team, I'm attempting to remove some stress in my life by messing around with the MAF wiring, namely extending both plugs a little bit. Hopefully this will help me get my.meat hooks in underneath the airbox a little easier.
Has anyone worked on this wiring before? I ask as one of the 4 wires is inside a sheilded sleeve. There are 2 wires in this sleeve but one (black one) is not used. I'm wondering if the length of the extension needs to be shielded as well (~7cm).

Re: DIY MAF wiring
Yeah, I've redone people's MAF wiring before. On one memorable occasion, the wires were twisted together and the shielding was replaced with a chewing gum wrapper. Re-did it properly, all soldered and heat shrink.
I personally would use shielded cable for the extension, but I would be surprised if there would be any tangible benefit over such a short distance. But since you can't really know, better to err on the side of caution.
The black wire is connected to the shield and its purpose is to drain the intercepted spikes to ground.

"The black wire is connected to the shield and its purpose is to drain the intercepted spikes to ground." hmmm where is it connected to the shield? ECU end? The black wires on each side were hanging in the wind, not connected to anything @ the MAF end - actually cut flush with the end of the shielding/insulation.
Re: DIY MAF wiring
I don't know where it's connected to the shielding. Presumably other end if you don't see any connection at the MAF end. The wiring diagrams clearly show that the black wire is the shielding and that it's connected to the earth in the wiring harness.

Re: DIY MAF wiring
The ECU is also connected to the same ground, so while the wire doesn't go to the ECU directly, they are still connected by their grounds.

Re: DIY MAF wiring
Cool thanks for confirming, I'll extended the black wire and shielding JIC
Re: DIY MAF wiring
You could check the continuity between the black wire and the shielding. If you've got continuity, then you only need to extend the shielding.
