As a general rule I go for 5w 40 to vw 505.01.
Fully synthetic.
It was recommended to me on here.
So I stuck with it. Never had a reason to change.

That is an excellent oil, but technically doesn’t meet the 505.01 spec.

I'm running Castrol Edge 5w40 FST as recommended a bunch on this forum, about to give G S55502M4 a go just out of interest (its not 505.01 though).

I wouldn’t risk a non 505.01 oil personally.

That Motul is an oil I use on other stuff too.
I'm absolutely convinced it would exceed 505.01 by a comfortable margin. But also unnecessary - I just run Castrol Edge 5w40 FST in mine since it IS 505.01, is easily available and a bit cheaper.

Been using Amsoil euro. It's not cheap but seems good.

To be honest, as long as you follow a sensible start up and cool down cycle and change it regularly, you could probably get away with Duckhams Q or Millers Pistoneeze and never notice a difference.
But when it's so easy to get an oil certified to meet the spec, why would you deviate. But am equally confident the Motul Ester Synth stuff exceeds the spec, it's just not certified. I don't think any of it is a particularly big deal as long as you start up, cool down properly and change it regularly.

I agree Amsoil does do some good oils. But outside of a lab, I doubt any of us will notice a difference between OK, Good & Great as long as the oil's the right viscosity for the engine.
I did used to run my original Rover V8 Landrover on that recycled oil you could get from Tescos. Now that was <beep> and used to blow blue smoke out of the exhaust. Back to Duckhams Q and all was good again - this was in the days before synthetics were widely available.
But despite all that, my car still exclusively gets Castrol FST 10W40 because it's easy to get and meets the spec.
