According to the experts (?) toluene can cause cancer.

I had an interesting chat with a Tubiscope (spelling?) technician the other day. They basically sell/hire all sorts of inspection cameras right down to those tiny wire thin cameras used for micro surgery.

He and one of his cameras was involved in an investigation into the condition of engines using different suppliers fuels. He is now converted to using quality clean burning additive enhanced fuels such as Optimax as he said the build up/deposits that he recorded from sending one of these cameras down the test engines was quite astonishing. Everthing from the injectors to the valves. Unfortunately he didn't get the names of the better or worse fuels but he said he would always go for the named brand stuff from now on!

As long as the BANG aint too loud under my s/plugs and I can hear my turbos still..... they get the least tax possible ... now if it was a RS4 or nicer - of course I would convert to cleaner..... if they did a diesel S4 ... well I probably would run it on heating oil or chip fat ... just to piss of the Taxman .... so incase he is a fan - :<beep>_you:
happy dayz .... party ....

KayGee,

Just to clear this up, toluene is not the same as benzene (it is benzene but with one of the hydrogens on the hydrocarbon ring replaced with a "methyl" (CH3) group). This makes toluene MUCH, MUCH LESS DANGEROUS - which is why it is used so widely in place of benzene. Benzene is VERY carcinogenic, toluene is NOT.

I still wouldn't want to get it on my hands too often, but it is not soemthing to concern yorself with in the same way as benzene would be.

In case anyone cares, another derivative of benzene called phenol IS harmful in another way. This is just liek toluene but the methyl group is replaced with a "hydoxyl" (OH) group. This burns your skin like you just would not believe. Its more painful than concentrated acid - trust me, I know!

hope this helps,

Tim (a very sad Biochemist)

Its good to know there are seriously technical folks on these sites. I prefer brains to bullsh#t.

So can anyone add anything to the discussion for which is the best fuel out there?

Tim,

RE:Benzene. My point (admitedly badly made) was petrol already contains something much more likely to cause cancer than toulene, benzene....

I will definately make the switch when it becomes available in the midlands. Greenergy have a top product in my opinion with thier 99 RON fuel.
Lets hope it promts Shell to release Optimax Extreme, 100 RON fuel in the UK. They have been selling it in Australia for quite some time. Now that would be fantastic with a can of Millers as well !!!!

I thought that I would contatc shell to see if they were going to bring Optimax Extreme into the UK market:
Thier answer was:
I am writing further to your email enquiring whether there are plans to bring a
higher octane fuel to the UK.
Shell do not currently have any plans to introduce a 99 or 100 RON unleaded petrol
to the UK market. Shell Optimax was developed for those UK motorists who seek
increased performance and protection for their car. In determining which fuels to
offer to our customers in any given market we undertake extensive research in order
to determine which is the most appropriate portfolio to make available. Markets
will vary in many ways and we seek to supply the fuels most appropriate for our
customers in each market given current customer needs, emerging customer needs, and
manufacturing and logistical capabilities and constraints. With Shell Optimax we
feel we have struck the right balance for now in the UK market and we are delighted
with the customer response that we have experienced since launch.
We do however take on board requests from our customers and do note the interest
there is in higher specification fuels, such customer feedback will form part of any
future premium fuels initiatives.

Thank you for taking the time to contact Shell

If you feel like sending them a mail to let them know that a demand exists the mail address is: retailcustomerservices@shell.com

You never know, if enough people send them a request they may think about adding another premium fuel :D

No, the V Power is the U.S. version of optimax it would seem, however it only has an octain rating up to 93, so not as good as our optimax.

While on the subject of optimax, I've heard that some Optimax outlets sell piss poor fuel that's worse than normal stuff. Does anyone know of any example of this as I don't want to be putting crap stuff in the tank?
