Key Coding Problem
Key Coding Problem
My car came with one key which manually locks/ unlocks the doors and starts it but the buttons don't work. Changed the battery and still don't work so spoke to a locksmith about repairing it aswell as cutting a new key.
Visited him tonight and he tested my key which he said was working fine but the car wasn't recognising the buttons being pressed. He made a new key and spent ages on 3 different systems connected to the car but each time it said failed.
He reckons there is an issue somewhere maybe with the comfort unit. He said he can cut a new key and try manually adding the key by one in ignition and one in door but if it doesn't work I'll still have to pay £120 but I'll have 2 keys that work manually but not by using the buttons.
He said Audi would have the same issue.
Guess I'm going to have to pay the £120 and at least I'll have a spare key but would be good to know what the issue is with coding it through the obd.
Anyone ever had a problem with a key that won't connect to the car? Not sure where to start with repairing it. Cheers

Re: Key Coding Problem
I have had mine go out of sync before. I follow the VCDS manual to get it hooked back, all the other ways have never worked for me

Hi mate
The key is programmed to car as it wouldn’t start, as Matt has said the key has either gone out of sync or the key pad side of things has failed.
You can just order a new key remote from TPS or and Audi dealer and just find a decent independent who has either an Auto logic or Genuine VAG software that can code it for you.
My advice on a key from a locksmith is that sometimes they can cause other issues as they are not from genuine stock, I’ve had this before.
I bought a second key for mine about a year ago from TPS and I think I paid about £140.00 for the key and then just coded it.

Re: Key Coding Problem
Does the key start the car? Is the problem that the fob won’t open the doors?

Good point. I thought we were talking about the remote.
I have coded a new transponder chip before, can’t quite remember how though.

Yeah, 2 completely separate issues.

Re: Key Coding Problem
The key locks and unlocks in the door aswell as starting the car. The buttons on the remote don't work. The locksmith tested the remote by pressing the buttons near a gadget he had and it beeped everytime which meant it was working but not syncing with the car.
He then made another key and plugged his computer into the obd to try and pair it whilst turning the ignition on with my key. Spent an hour trying to do it but failed on 3 different systems.
He said only other way is to cut a blade and try putting a key in ignition and a key in the door but I would have to pay the 120 once he has cut the key.
He said he has dealer systems and that there may be an issue with my car.

Re: Key Coding Problem
Remember there are two, almost completely separate, systems at work here. And that's ignoring the key blade in the mechanical locks.
The immobiliser chip inside the key allows the car to start when you turn the key in the ignition.
The radio remote (buttons on the key) activates the central locking.
There are sequences to reset the remote locking (and recognise new keys), not that complex, you don't even always need VCDS or a computer.
If they don't work chances are something is broken inside the car, as implied above.

Re: Key Coding Problem
Thanks, I'm going to get that second key made so I can try what's been suggested.

Is the comfort module the one that gets soaked when the pollen filter seal has failed?

Re: Key Coding Problem
Yes suz. Under the front passenger carpet.
I have just ordered one for mine and door locks for my central locking issue.
At the moment the central locking works fine.
But keeps logging “won’t safe” and won’t “de safe” faults every time I run auto scan.
After 6 faults are logged the auto lock function stops working. So have to scan then clear faults. Function is then ok until it logs another 6 faults.
Really pisses me off.
Hopefully it will be sorted very soon.

Re: Key Coding Problem
Sounds like your locksmith doesn't know what he's talking about. The system that lets the car recognise the key (transponder embedded in the key body) appears to be working perfectly. If it's starting the car, then it's working. Why would he cut another key? Even that doesn't make any sense. You can change the blade independently of the transponder - I know because I've done it when Audi screwed up the key I ordered from them (that's a whole 'nother story).
The fob (the bit that send RF codes to the car to lock or unlock) is completely independent of the other system.
I have had the case several times with other people's cars where the fob can't be programmed to the car using the usual method. You have use VCDS to delete all 4 learned fobs and then use the VCDS procedure to learn the fob. No point faffing around using the method in the car's user manual. If it doesn't work then VCDS is the only solution.
I don't believe you have a problem with the comfort module.

Re: Key Coding Problem
Agree with you shopp. Don’t think the ccm is responsible for the key fob issue.
He also has the won’t safe and won’t de safe issues.
That could be the ccm or door lock micro switches or wiring through the door etc.
All very common issues I am led to believe.
I will soon know a lot more. When mine goes in for repairs.
