Golf R32 slays Audi RS4

Post by Chins » Fri Jan 17, 2003 11:26 pm

Ok. Needed something to get you lot to read the thread.
But as I type this the R32 is killing the RS4.

My R32 turns up next week. There is still time to change. My px is sold

The sensible side says get the R32 and order an S4 for July time. The R32 will still be in heavy demand and you'll get one of the first S4's, which will be better than an RS4 in many ways - stiffer chassis, better gearchange, interior etc.

But another side says, buy another RS4.

The other side says they are overpriced and values will tumble as soon as the S4 hits the street. The S4 Avant will be the car to have.

Whilst I wish money was no object, it is. I'm concerned about the RS4 in the short to medium term.

Should I stay with the R32 slaying RS4 ?

Only 48 hours to sort it out

Hey Jonathan, how good's the R32 - must be a cool machine to slay a standard RS4

Dont think the RS4 residuals will be affected at all with the release of the new S4. The linited numbers should take care of that (even though the S4 could well be a better motor all round - we'll see )

Let us know what you decide mate, and good luck (especially on trackdays in an R32 when I'm there )

Got my attention.....

Lost it again.... LOL . In it's standard form, I think this is a bold statement. Modified, now that's a different story, on the right circuit. Watch out Andy, that's fightin' talk

Like to think I could challenge some of you lot in an R32, but dynamically there is only one winner.

The reason the R32 is killing the RS4 is in the sensible buy stakes.

Somethings telling me the R32 is going to bore me. I'll get lots of Saxos, chipped Golfs etc trying it on and silly speeds will ensue. In the RS4 they dont even try, and even if they did it only takes 1/2 mile for them to know its a lost cause

As you can tell I'm looking for good reasons to mentally tell myself the RS4 is what I want

Had a chat with Thorney, but need input from people that have enough style never to buy a TT Roadster

From the reviews, it appears to me that the R32 is a better car than the S3 in the dynamics/power areas. Wish someone would test a chipped S3 (and I mean properly, not like the Superchips marketing review Evo did)...

My only comment (this time) is that whenever you compare cars and one of them is a turbo car, you should do so on the basis that it is chipped.

There can't be many of us who buy a turbo car and don't chip it. Even those who don't are tempted to.

When I bought my S4 (after advice from Chins I might add...) it was on the basis that I would mod it.

I had the dilemma that the new S4 would be produced (although it's taken longer that I first expected), so was I making a mistake by buying an old S4?

No, because now that my S4 is modded, I know that it would 'slay' the new S4 in terms of performance (mostly 'cos its got loads more torque).

As to the R32 - isn't it a 2-door hatchback? Not much competition to a 4-door estate in practicality terms!

The new S4 IMO:
1. Is a [censored] load slower than an RS4
2. Looks <beep>
3. According to auto magazines can't even beat an M3

I fail to see how RS4 prices will soften when they become more availble on the streets - it will always be a 'warm' 4 as everyone knows the unltimate Audi marque is the 'RS'.

I'd run the R32 for a bit cos you won't lose anything if you sell it in June (assuming delivery times remain as long) then I'd get an RS4 - you know you want to.
