Sound improvements with downpipes

Post by Cjm1980 » Tue Sep 01, 2020 11:08 am

Hi all I’m seriously considering getting a remap and sports downpipe on my c7 performance edition. It already has the Audi sports exhaust and I’m wondering what people who have done the same make of the difference in sound?

I met with a load of mates with C7's a few years ago and we lined them all up and listened to them one after the other. They all had different configurations.
The best sounding car in my opinion was the one with the standard cat back exhaust but with custom catless downpipes. Not sure how the catless will compare to the sport cats though.
If getting a remap though, why not go catless? Catless will be much cheaper than sports cats and have increased power gains but will be a pain at MOT time.

Catless downpipes and cattless exhaust could be too loud, in my opinion best sound is when you have stock Downpipes and catlles exhaust, but yes if doing a stage 2 I would also recommend doing cattless Downpipes and cattless exhaust.

I’d be worried about the smell if I went catless?

I’m not comparing Apple with Apple here. And possibly won’t help with resulting sound. But, what I can confirm is that with my E46 M3 I went catless for a while and the db level increased considerably over 100cells and the smell was horrible and lingered for day of you left the boot open whilst idling. So they didn’t last long on the M before I went back to 100cells. And with that it was perfect.

I’ve too been considering sports car down pipes and leaving the standard sports exhaust from the cats back. I’d be interested to hear anything you find or do.

Hope that helps???

Craig.

I have the downpipes and milltek sports cats and I can say; noise increase in dynamic was increased a lot but in comfort it was subtle so you can still hear yourself think. No smell what so ever.

Would you say that in comfort it’s similar to a full standard sports system in dynamic?

*edit* I presume you have miltek catback system too? As aren’t the miltek downpipes only compatible with the miltek system?

I think it’s too much for a daily driving if you always drive like in dynamic by using comfort mode with cattless Downpipes and Miltek none resonated exhaust

I've never been in one with the OEM sport exhaust so can't really comment on that but I'd say it may still be OEM quiet, you'd hardly know it was there.

Yea, full system; downpipes, sports cats, non res centre and back boxes. I did have the road+ centre section before the non res. It was quiet in comfort more or less the same as OEM and loud in dynamic.

I have a Remus cat-back which is quieter/deeper than the Milltek but still plenty loud enough, especially in sport. I think a total cat delete would be verging on the obnoxious, especially with the Milltek. Comfort is noticeably louder than the OEM sports exhaust I had before and sport is really open road (or deserted road, preferably) and “wake the dead”...

Thanks for that Ed I’ve been weighing up the APR and Remus
