Gearbox Woes

Post by ZedRS6 » Tue Aug 25, 2020 2:56 pm

I know this topic had been done to death but i couldn’t find a definitive answer, so I’ve been getting the usual signs where I can feel it slip mainly in the lower gears and some times it doesn’t lock and suddenly it locks Giving a jolt.
Had it scanned it came up with the PO741 code, did a gearbox oil change and it hasn’t cured it. So I’m guessing I’m gonna need a rebuild know I’ve enquired with a few people I am and I’m most likely to go with the autotrans-in Wembley obvious reasons it’s a lot cheaper than others now and he seems pretty confident as he’s done a few and also does it with the engine in place.
Now My question is regarding torque converters; my car is not standard it was upgraded by Sportech many years ago and the figures that were 600 BHP with around 820nm, I spoke to Sportec and they said the T/converter they installed was upgraded and I don’t know how they upgraded and what they used to upgrade it. Auto trans tell me that they upgrade the T/converters but he hasn’t specified how he does it, another company I spoke to at Bristol transmissions told me they would refurbish the T/converter to the spec it is so if it’s an upgraded they will refurbish it to that upgraded specification. I would like to know if anyone has actually found a company that sells upgraded T/converters as I would prefer to just install it with an upgraded T/converter the Sportec converter was done many years ago so might be not the greatest anymore.
Hoping somebody can shed some light on the recent experiences with this Gearbox
Thanks

I bought a second hand TC from the American (RS6.com) forums and the seller sent it to A.C.E for me. A.C.E upgraded it and sent it to me in the UK. Cost was just under £600 at the time including shipping and taxes.

Advanced Automotion in the US also do upgrades. The basic specs are on their website.

Wow that’s a really good price, how has it been holding up? Have you got a link for their website, can’t seem to find it.

Zed,
Thanks for posting your question.
I recently had a gearbox service at Auto Trans, Wembley and would probably use them if I ever need a rebuild.
People in the past have had mixed results with US imported components and of course the other issue is reluctance of local rebuilders to want to guarantee work were others have involvement, so I would think it might be better if you can find someone who takes responsibility for the whole job.
Good luck and do let us know how you get on.

https://www.edgeracingconverters.com/ Don’t seem to list Audi anymore. Mines been going fine for 8 years now.

Always an issue, I'd agree that some US mods are not up to the standard that we expect from Euro components. The real issue in this case is finding someone who has experience in the ZF box, has actually done upgrades to the TC and so on, in order to choose them. I'm inclined to wish to find someone who has a run or two on the board. Where I am, I am unaware of any "experts" in these gearboxes. Sure, I can find some drag racing transmission experts who live and breathe high stall TC's, but road cars? So yes, ideal situation if you can find someone to take on the job from start to stop and guarantee the whole outcome, just that I can't, so reduced to buying in the best components that I can find. In this instance they take the old core which is a far more economical outcome than buying a mod TC outright, if you can find one. I'd be more inclined to deal with UK based businesses but as seen on here, very few can name someone who can do the job and still in business.
