Car/Driveway Security Advice

Post by ShaneyB » Thu Jun 11, 2020 3:59 pm

Afternoon all, I hope you and yours are all safe and well.
After the failed armed car theft attempt on my house last year a couple of neighbours have reported two different cars on different days turning around by their houses and then pausing for a few minutes looking at my car before driving away. Could be completely innocent but you never know.

I just wanted to ask what car or driveway security measures you are taking and what are the most effective solutions? I've looked at driveway posts, steering locks, trackers etc, but not which route (if any) to go down. I vowed after last year that no tw*t of a thief will dictate what I want to do with my car choice but just starting a re-think it. If they come in to get my car keys I'm sure they will politely ask for the keys/codes to any locks I might have.

All house security was upgraded last year and it took them over 5 minutes to get inside back then so hopefully they won't get in the house anyway.

Any thoughts please?

Cheers
Shane

For a start, make sure your keys are kept in a shielded key box, don't rely on the key pouches, I have had 3 now and after a period of time they stop working. Even the 'best' branded Defender stopped working.

Thanks Saudrick,
After my last experience shielded boxes are not worth it. If they break in they'll just come upstairs and force us to give them the keys if they can't find them. The car's unimportant to me at that point. I get what you're saying regarding getting the code from your key with a laptop or tablet though.

Hey Shaney,

If you go back on my thread when I joined you'll see this list but as my Rangie was nicked from outside my house I was just as paranoid as you.

I deliberately got a facelift that didn't have keyless but that's no help obviously.

Mine has a ghost on it (yes argument about attacking you for the sequence) which is a brilliant bit of kit.

It then has a Vodafone protect and connect 5 with the keytags you have to carry with you or it alerts the call centre even if they have the keys and they can track/remote shut the car down if the police authorise it.

Then it has an automatrics hidden tracker (watch their videos they're awesome.

Finally a crocklock elite.

Seems like overkill but it at the very least makes me sleep better.

A full-size Disklok (the original ones) has got to be the starting point. Park the other car (if you have one) behind your RS6.
Bollards if you can get them installed.

All stuff to try and delay them and make them rethink about looking at yours for the extra time/hassle it will take to get it.

You say you’ve upgraded the home security so that’s probably as much as you can do. You can get driveway chimes/alarms which will sound if someone steps on your driveway to try and give you a heads up but beware of false alarms from cats/foxes etc
Mortgages, Insurance, Financial Matters.....need help....ask away
RS4.....another :-)
Previous - all sorts

Similar experience with break in theft a couple of years back - replaced all windows and fitted toughened glass as well as multipoint locks and new external doors, added security lights plus alarm, cctv , now close and lock the gates and have a steel bollard behind the gates too. Oh and a second Belgian Shepherd - like another victim said, it helps me sleep better.

Sorry to hear of all you guys suffering attacks! It’s what keeps me awake at night! As such this is the list I’ve done.

Stop lock elite
Ghost
S5 bollard (fitted by the brilliant Bollard Security team)
Lathams security doors front and back
Keys in faraday box
58kg Rottweiler
98kg me in me pants with a 1.5m breaker bar. You come in my house, I’m doing time.

I had a similar dilemma with my non Keyless B8 S4.

A couple of different people tried to break in to get to the keys, it's a horrible feeling because there's not too much you can do, if someone wants to get in, they'll get in.

With a disk lock/gate/post in the driveway do you find you're able to keep the discipline up to keep the key/fob somewhere different to your car keys?

I get torn between the argument of stopping people from getting the car and letting them take it so they don't break in. I reckon theres a balance of putting off the relay theft people, but making it easy enough for the armed people so they don't come in the house

I ended up writing some software that monitored my Nest cam for "people' events between 10pm-5am and turned on a bunch of smart bulbs in a specific order with a delay (landing - hallway - lounge) as if I were coming downstairs. Unfortunately Nest have since changed the way you interact with the camera so it no longer works :(

Although it’s all relatively new, my discipline (ex forces) is pretty stern.

As for the keys. They’re kept separate But all in the area the lump with the teeth lives! And he’s not shy of using them! Haha.

In fight or flight scenarios I reside in the fight section. It’s not a conscious decision but an automatic one. And my view is that if they’re brave enough to enter your house. They’re not going to just say thanks and leave nicely if you make the keys readily available. From the news reports I’ve read. They more often than not “send” a guy or 2 to the bedrooms to quell any movement. And they don’t give a fcuk for sex or age. They hit whomever they encounter. So they can meet me first. And both them and me can take our chances. As I said before I don’t have a single second thought on doing time to protect my family. And would quite happily permanently damage any I encounter.

I thought the same initially. IF you swing a baseball bat or other object at one of three men armed with knives in your bedroom and miss, what do you think will happen? Also (according to the coppers who interviewed us) you then instigated the attack and they stab you/your family in self defence. Not worth it for a piece of metal. Let em have the bloody car.

Shane,

I’m totally with you man on it’s only a piece of metal. And IF they get the into the car and take it so be it. As you say it’s only metal and can be replaced, BUT if they’re in the house and coming upstairs. They’re not coming to ask politely. And they’re going to go for the weak and vulnerable first. I’m just gunna head them off at the pass. The Mrs and son know the drill and it’s barricade yourself in the bedroom. And call the police on speakerphone. I’ve had C”””” fire AK47’s at me, fire RPG’s at me and try to blow me up with IED’s I ain’t letting these Fcuks terrorise me in my home.

I’m in no way judging anyone for their own actions and everyone reacts differently in high stress life and death situations. I’m just fortunate (which I didn’t think I’d ever say) to have been exposed to this kind of fight or flight. And have learnt how to remain cool but fckuing ferocious!

Do what you can and what you deem the right thing for the situation dudes. It’s sad times that we live in a world that people deem the way to obtain nice things is by home armed robbery. Or any other form of theft to be honest. Instead of graftin your nuts off giving all for the honest pound.

✌️

Agreed Craig,
They were heading upstairs in my house last year when they got spooked. First door they would have come to is my 17 year old sons bedroom and we're the next floor up. I've not been in the forces but have been in similar situations in a house twice before last year and resisted (successfully). The second time they didn't come back for my car but for me.

My aim as said above now is to make it as visually awkward to pinch and make the house as hard as possible to get into.

If the 6 does go at any point I'll get a chug about to have a laugh in. I have GAP so it's not the end of the world.

After a house break in 1 week after having the car I had a driveway post fitted. Hopefully just enough to make it harder to knick than the next one.

Hi Henry, I've seen your post (ooerr).
Can you let me know what make/model it is please?
