DIY Trans Service

Post by cammmy » Fri Jun 05, 2020 10:31 am

Hi All, been discussing a DIY trans service in a couple of threads and thought I would collate the information. I've wasted a bit of money on parts that don't fit, so hopefully this helps someone.

First up, our trans is a ZF 6HP28 A61 Type LLJ or KZQ but that's not the end of the story. It seems to be some kind of RS6 specific version. I haven't found definitive documentation on this (Other than the Audi parts guys saying that type doesn't appear on anything else in their system), but searching for parts that fit has been challenging.

The parts you will need:

Lifeguard 6 fluid (I bought 10 litres from GSF when they were doing 60% off, a regular end of month thing.)

https://www.gsfcarparts.com/980aa1810

Audi part numbers

Gasket - 09E 321371A - £62.16
Filter - 09E 325429 (BE CAREFUL WITH THIS, READ BELOW)
Mechatronic bridge - 09E 325443A

I could not find Audi part numbers for the 4 sleeves (three parts numbers as there are two of the shortest used) but here are the ZF ones:

0734 317 370
0734 317 371
0734 317 372

I used this to get the 4 sleeves but note that the bridge and adapter sleeve are not usable. The bridge is not tall enough and our trans doesn't have the adapter sleeve:

With regards to the filter. I found that searching by the Audi part number brings up incorrect results. The sites may tell you they are compatible, but they aren't. Use the ZF part number:

ZF 0501223001

This has a deeper pickup that goes into the small sump section of the pan.

On most of the 6HP boxes, there is a sleeve that goes into the trans casing that is removable. This is not the case on the RS6 trans. On ours, it is a socket, attached to the mechatronic wiring. I just replaced the o-rings (I don't know the exact size, I just had some that were close enough in an o-ring kit)

When performing the service, it's mostly the same as all the other 6HP units with a couple of exceptions. The plug in the casing has a little spring clip holding it from the outside. The 4 sleeves have little caps on on them, rather than the rubber sleeves directly contacting the mechatronics unit.

Before undertaking the service yourself. Have a read through this thread, as there are pictures of the things I'm describing:

In terms of tools, you will need a torque wrench that goes low. I bought a unit that does 5nm - 25nm for this. You will also want a set of internal circlip pliers for pulling out the sleeves. They come out easily with these.

There is more discussion and information on the box in this thread:

Hopefully this information is useful. It's not a full how to, I just hoped to pass on information that cost me in time and money for the wrong parts.

Bit of a Typo there - its ZF 6HP28 A61 type LLJ or type KZQ - No idea what difference there is between the two types

Thanks, I've edited that. Mine has LLJ on the ID plate and that's the code the Audi guy gave me. Did they change it at some point?

Based on nothing else than my guess - alphabetically KQZ comes before LLJ and my 2008 car is a KQZ code so maybe the LLJ coded version came out later????
