B7 rs4 whirring/buzzing/whirring noise
Hi everyone I'm new to the b7 rs4 and must say I love it..........but I have a annoying problem with it
When the max revs 7000rpm message on the clocks changes to 60° oil temp I get an annoying whirring/buzzing/whirring noise appear around the gearbox area at first I thought power steering pump but it does not change with the engine speed i also did a power steering flush but i don't think it's the pump
Any ideas lads

Does yours change at 60 degrees? Mine is 70.
Not able to help regarding the noise, I'm afraid.

Yes it's pretty much when it changes to oil temp car quiet until this
It has to be some sort of valve opening or an auxiliary pump I'm new to the 4.2 so unsure how it operates

Re: B7 rs4 whirring/buzzing/whirring noise
ive had no issue with mine atall in 9 yrs of use in my RS4 , so have a look at the front of the radiator .it might have some newer oil cooler fitted to the crash bar or something as the original ones can leak with the connectors corroded a bit ,so fancy ones will be maybe cheaper than the OEM , cant remember the type replaced but some folk have mentioned the buzzing drone through the chassis as the oem ones are mounted differntly so maybe the oil thermostat probably opens at that temp and then buzzing noise with the oil through the cooler

Thanks is it a bumper off job
Re: B7 rs4 whirring/buzzing/whirring noise
It's the Forge oil cooler that makes a quiet buzzing sound. Although it doesn't start buzzing at any specific temperature, or I haven't noticed it anyway.
You'll be able to tell of you've got a standard or Forge cooler by looking through the bumper mesh.
The OE cooler is mounted down below the radiator behind the power steering cooler.
The Forge one is mounted on top of the crash bar.

Oh ok mine starts buzzing/whirring after its warmed up and can be intermittent almost like a power steering pump whine but it doesn't change with engine speed cars perfectly quiet until this kicks in
It sounds like the pedal box area (rhd) and by gearbox its doing my nut in I hate noises

This is not much help to Oldmanmush but here is my experience. I noticed a whine after my Forge cooler was fitted - volume/frequency varies with engine speed though. Most days I don't hear it but on the odd day it is loud - around 2000rpm - it is the loudest noise the car makes (standard exhaust).

B16 Coilovers, Forge oil cooler - otherwise standard.
Re: B7 rs4 whirring/buzzing/whirring noise
It could be the oil separator

I don't think it has the forge cooler it still looks stock I can see it's at the bottom of the bumper

Toady1 where is the oil separator located as I say it doesn't start buzzing until the max 7000 rpm message switches over to oil temp its almost as if a valve has opened and that's what's buzzing

Re: B7 rs4 whirring/buzzing/whirring noise
Hi guys I've sorted my buzzing/whirring noise
The cars had a full service plugs filters oils engine/gearbox/diff coilovers the oil filter was quite bad (I've not long owned it) but I also removed the front bumper to check the oil cooler and to my surprise its had a new one along with new pipes but they were touching the body probably resonating through the chassis sorted them out and now it's like new no noises runs perfect

Re: B7 rs4 whirring/buzzing/whirring noise
Hi oldmanmush, I have the same issue with the buzzing/whining noise after fitting the Forge oil cooler. Curious to hear what exactly you did to resolve this, how did you route the lines under the car where they go through the chassis "hole" just before they connect to the oil sump? Did you get rid of the hard hose clamp that comes with the forge kit, that is used to guide the hoses through the hole? Were the hoses touching the body or anything else anywhere else on your car that you fixed? Would really appreciate the help on this as it is really annoying of a noise. Thanks!
