Warped Front Discs after 6000 miles and less than a year
Tetbury Audi have confirmed that my Front Discs are warped (N/S 0.4mm and O/S 0.15m runout). They are less than 12 months old and I've done just over 6000 miles.
They have stated that the car is safe to drive and aren't telling me I have to replace the brakes, although they did say that discs and pads would be £1350 fitted.
What should I do?
Do I have a case to claim that the parts have failed prematurely or should I claim on my Audi Extended Warranty? Should I collect the car and have the discs skimmed?
I'd appreciate your thoughts. Thanks,
Chris

If less than a year and that mileage they should be covered under Audi parts warranty I think.
If not, skimmed by ProCut and get another 15k out of them for £200 ish.

Re: Warped Front Discs after 6000 miles and less than a year
I am always surprised by these instances as I am on 42k miles on the original pads and discs. Mine went through a period of slight judder around 10k but I used the brakes for the next few hundred miles as though I was running in a new set of pads and the judder cleared. Its really harded to believe they are warped to such a point that nothing can be repaired in 6k miles?!?
Re: Warped Front Discs after 6000 miles and less than a year
Are they warped or is it a bit of brake pad residue?
In my experience brake pad residue is normally only felt on medium braking. Proper warped discs rattle the car to pieces and it gets worse the faster you are going / harder you are braking.

Re: Warped Front Discs after 6000 miles and less than a year
I agree - brake pad residue stuck to a disc will give a warped brake disc feeling to some extent but you would certainly know the difference. A true warped disc will be felt under any pressure from the brake pedal..

Re: Warped Front Discs after 6000 miles and less than a year
Tetbury Audi have said they are warped (N/S 0.4mm and O/S 0.1) and that there's a tight spot as the discs are rotated. They also tell me that there's almost no wear on the disc face. The pads are 20% worn. I've done just over 6000 miles and have never cooked the brakes or used them harshly. They have confirmed that there's no signs of excessive heat on the on the disc or pads.
The discs and pads were fitted on 31 October by Guildford Audi.
I've asked Tetbury Audi to remove the discs and check the run out off the car. I've also asked them to check the mating surfaces are clean. My suspicion is that the discs may not have been fitted correctly and hopefully just aren't running 'true'. In February 2019 I noticed a once per revolution 'hush' noise coming from the N/S and asked Taunton Audi to have a look. They reported No Fault Found. I think this was the disc touching the pad that I could hear, so maybe they've always been running out of true since I bought the car in January 2019.
The judder under braking is very slight, but is more noticeable with speed. It's not worse when I brake really heard - maybe less judder if anything. It certainly isn't rattling the car to pieces. I noticed it first when braking from 75mph as I left the dual carriageway. There's almost no vibration when braking at lower speeds.
I'm going to call Guildford Audi next and see if I can argue to Parts Warranty point.
I'll keep you posted.
Thanks for your responses btw.

Put it this way, I had the very same issue with OE Porsche discs fitted by an independent to my wife’s 997 and they were replaced FOC by Porsche without question. Why should Audi be different when dealer fitted?
Re: Warped Front Discs after 6000 miles and less than a year
Sounds like pad residue to me. Give it a good spanking and see if it helps. I had it on the rs4 and most of the time it wasn't noticeable and when it was it wasn't severe. It would come and go too, lots of light braking and it would be back. I had warped discs on an Alfa once and it was so much different, the car was undrivable at motorway speeds.ChrisYates10 wrote: ↑Mon Oct 21, 2019 4:58 pmTetbury Audi have said they are warped (N/S 0.4mm and O/S 0.1) and that there's a tight spot as the discs are rotated. Warped Front Discs after 6000 miles and less than a year
I`ve had similar recently albeit with OEM Discs and Ferodo DS2500 Pads, it was initially pad transfer onto the discs which did even out after some braking and driving.
But I`m more included to believe they are starting to warp and small cracks are appearing across the fronts and we are starting to feel vibration.
My Discs have been on the car around 5/6k, but it is used as intended around the roads in gods country !
This will be the last set of OEM Discs I fit on my car anyhow, gonna beef up this time and go with AP Racing front & Rear with Pagid RSL29 front / RSL19 rear Pads.
Hopefully these will last a bit longer.

Re: Warped Front Discs after 6000 miles and less than a year
I'd like to point a finger at Audi's rubbish disks, should anyone else want to point that way.
My RS4 warped at 4000 miles in, and my 6 warped at around the same. The warp I have now is ever so slight, but when it gets warmer, like the 4 it gets bigger. They are not enough to warrant replacing, but it's annoying. The brakes should be 100% true at all temps.
I would be tempted to get a set of AP variants, and would never pay for audi's disks ever again. I do think that the design of them leans towards the 'revenue stream' side of engineering as opposed to technical excellence.
I did drive a 4 with ceramics, and for all the wonderful spec my car has, it's one option I crave. The feel of the ceramics was sublime.

Mine were warped, after maybe 10k miles and 10 months. Replaced under Audi warranty

Re: Warped Front Discs after 6000 miles and less than a year
I agree Mark, I'm hoping that Guildford Audi will also agree and that Tetbury Audi can then replace them for me.
I am worried though. I bought a good car, a high performance car and paid a premium for the privilege. That said, there seems to be less than premium aspects to the engineering of the components, which despite their apparent shortfalls, still cost a fortune to replace.
I might go back to BMW - I never had this issue with any of their cars.

Re: Warped Front Discs after 6000 miles and less than a year
I had it once with my RS6 and twice with the same BMW. And twice with a Porsche. Never with the cars when new (I run in gently) but always with pad and disc replacement.ChrisYates10 wrote: ↑Tue Oct 22, 2019 10:02 pmI agree Mark, I'm hoping that Guildford Audi will also agree and that Tetbury Audi can then replace them for me.
