Best alarm/tracker

Post by steve2003rs6 » Sat Aug 31, 2019 8:47 pm

Hi all.
Getting paranoid about security
If money wasn’t an object what is the best way to protect your ride.
Looked at toad and Clifford. But you hear horror stories from badly fitted installations from “trained” installers.
Would like a system that connects to your mobile to warn you of any potential thieves and tracks the car if possible.
I have read lots of good information on here including ghost which allows the car to be driven for a short distance before it shuts down.
Appreciate that if a thief really wants it they will get it. But would like to know that I have taken every precaution possible within reason.
Clifford have offered me latest alarm and tracker for a reduced price of circa £700. The price includes fitting at your home.

Very expensive offer if you ask me. Bought this one one month ago and I'm very happy with it :https://www.amazon.fr/gp/product/B07D12 ... UTF8&psc=1
You just need a sim card associated with a gprs capable network and you're good to go. There are discounts on a regular basis for this brand, got mine at 60€, can't find a better product at whatever cost.

At any time I can send an sms to the device which in return replies with a google maps link. The associated android app gives a full view of all the car moves on a map, both real time and historical routes. There's also a shock detector which sends an sms to warn you the car is being moved or bumped (don't worry, you don't receive 100 sms when you drive). Lastly the rechargeable battery seems to last for a very long time. After nearly one month of continuous use the device says 90% battery left. A more sophisticated device would burn battery life much quicker.

Looks like a good device. Do you know if it has an output you can activate?

What's the cheapest PAYG in the UK? Actually, what sim do you use in France?

UK amazon version above.

Being a cynic I wonder how many of these are stuck onto cars thieves are interested in? How secure is the provider's system as that would give access to a load of cars that people thought were valuable to thieves?

Three are usually the cheapest for data but their coverage can be patchy. I'd want the network with the best coverage with as few dead spots as possible.

There is the option of Ghost which immobilises the car unless a set of buttons are pressed. A good old fashioned ignition cut switch under the seat might also stop the casual thieves.

I'm not sure what you mean by output, but there are quite a few options you can activate / disengage.
For such devices I use Free Telecom which has an unbeatable offer at 2€ per month perfectly suited for such devices.

An output, like a relay or similar to allow me to cut the fuel supply or something.

2 EUR is pretty good. Suspect the cheapest here would be £5.

Every connected device can potentially be cracked, as can be any door. Would that mean you won't use a single locker in your house?
Coverage : GPRS is a data protocol based on older 2G technology (2.5G to be precise) using lower frequencies but the good thing with 2G is that its coverage is generally better indoors and outdoors compared to its current 4g/5g counterparts. Doesn't preclude anyone to use an ignition switch on top for added safety, that's a good recommendation as well.

Oh I see. Depending on the thieves' motivation and expertise there could be several scenarios at play. If you remotely deactivate the ignition once the car is already gone, the thieves would know there's a connected device in there and a simple gsm scrambler would make it inefficient. Why not having a manual hidden ignition switch in the first place then?
But if you want to go down this route, I've heard of recommended devices on other forums, I'll search and report here. Not the same price though.

2g is also being turned off so that's another complication.

Here, they are often equipped with GPS and GPRS blockers anyway because they know that most desirable cars are fitted with trackers. This is still quite rare in France, but here even modest cars often have trackers fitted. Even the police have equipment in their patrol cars to radio-triangulate trackers (obvs not GPS but RF transmissions).

IMO, it helps to keep a car like this hidden. Mine is always garaged. When I drive home, I make sure I'm not being followed. Call me paranoid, but I even stop to check for magnetic trackers after going to a car meet.

Round me, the preferred way to steal cars is either keyless entry method off the drive or breaking in to get the keys. Only a mile from me one guy was dragged from his house, beaten and made to start his RS3 (it lived on the drive).

Eddie, the poor bastard, had his RS6 stolen at gunpoint! Again, only a few miles from me [Hmm, maybe time to consider moving. I don't like living so close to Eddie :boots: ]. GPS tracker not much use there.

The Clifford thing has anti-hijack. Lets them get a mile or so then cuts the fuel. I like this kind of system.

Hidden switches are useless. They always find them.

I always wondered whether an animatronic tarantula on the dashboard would also keep thieves at bay...

or a fake human turd on the seat.

Keeping the car hidden and not taking it anywhere dubious is sadly necessary as scum think they can have anything they want.

Thank you for all of the above.
Would go with Clifford but it’s only as good as the guy installing it.
Poorly made connections sensitivity incorrectly set up etc. All leading to lots of false alarms.

The system I was referring to is called 'Blocvol'. Strangely enough the website doesn't respond, maybe it's just temporarily :http://www.blocvol.com/
