New Wheels Questions...

Post by DaveBee » Sun Jan 06, 2019 2:42 am

I'm interested in replacing my wheels which are currently OEM non performance. Not buckled at all but want to change the looks. I've seen some Vossen wheels that I quite like but I have a question over TPMS... Should I remove the sensors from the existing wheels and fit them in new ones? If I order new wheels with TPMS already fitted, does it just work with the on board systems or do they need to be programmed?

Many thanks,
David

Assuming you have the right TPMS vlaves fitted to the new wheels then all you need to do when fitting them is go into the MMI menu under the tyre pressure section and select the right option (can't remember what it's called but I think it's the store tyre pressures one).
If I was taking the tyres off my oem wheels to use on new wheels then I'd use the same valves. If you are buying new tyres for the new wheels then I'd buy new sensors so I could swap between the 2 sets of wheels easily and not worry about any tyre pressure warnings.

Thanks Mike. That all seems pretty straight forward.

I'm interested in the VFS1 either in Matt Graphite or Satin Bronze (still trying to decide). It seems that I also don't know enough about wheel sizes... I currently have the 21 inch non performance wheels which I believe are 21 x 9.5. I have 285/30 tyres fitted. Vossens are available in 9.0 or 10.5 at 21 inch, yet at least one wheel supplier is quoting them with 275/30 tyres for both rim sizes. I really dislike the look of 'stretched' tyres and prefer to have as much rim protection as I can. Would 275 seem like the right tyre or would my 285's fit either rim size?

Thanks,
David

Nearly everyone with aftermarket wheels goes for 10.5 wide rims and use standard sized 285/30/21. 275/30/21 would be a little stretched. Some might argue that even 285s are stretched on a 10.5 but I think they are fine (and run them myself).

Thanks again Mike. Everywhere I look says 285 is the ideal size for 10.5 rims and that 295 would be the maximum. So it looks like I should be able to swap my existing tyres and TPMS onto new wheels while I get the originals refurbished.

Thanks.
