Smart Phone Interface Retrofit
Re: Smart Phone Interface Retrofit
Its made by Sinairyu, lots of other companies badge it as their own, yes it does what the MMI would do if the hardware was in place, it goes in line with the video signal to the screen and the main connector to the MMI unit, its controlled via canbus so controlled by the MMI controller.
Mine come directly from China but there are UK companies selling them on eBay for a premium.

You need to message China supplier with a few things so they can send the correct module, I was going to start bringing them in just not got around to it.

Re: Smart Phone Interface Retrofit
How long/painful was the installation?
Re: Smart Phone Interface Retrofit
I used to be an installer of these types of things so for me it didn't take long, if you are going to attempt it yourself then you just need to be confident with it, it involves the following.
1 Removal of either the panel under the steering wheel or the glove box, I went for the panel under the steering wheel as I already had the reversing camera module there.
2 Removal of the MMI unit, this is quite simple, the climate control panel pops out and there is one 8mm bolt behind that secures it, there are a few plugs that need unplugging and its fully out.
3 Remove the main connector and connector to the screen, insert the new wiring between these(just plug and play) route the cabling through to the chosen location of the module and reinstall MMI.
4 Run Apple cable to the desired location, plug everything into the Carplay module and then secure.
5 Test and refit panels and your done.

I’m interested to know what compromises their are over the OEM option. I see you have to select AUX under Media. I presume in the OEM there is a better way to activate CarPlay.
I guess you can’t use the USB connectors in the centre armrest, unless you run the new one through to there.
I think if I was going to retrofit i’d wait for one that supported CarPlay over WiFi, then fit a wireless charger in the arm rest.
I am still hoping to get the OEM feature activated, but I’m still waiting for Hazzydayz to get hold of the MMI firmware update mine needs.

Re: Smart Phone Interface Retrofit
When I enquired about activating it on older vehicles I was told by a very knowledgeable person that the hardware is not sufficient to run Carplay without problem hence it hasn't been activated.
There no point using the USB's in the center console as you need to plug a apple cable in anyway, you can route it to come out there if required.
The only downside I have discovered is you can't listen to the radio and have audio from the apps on carply, you can use any music service from your phone and the sound will come through aswell.

Great advice Lee looks like a great bit of kit, having Appleplay is orth the retro fit for me as the mmi is pretty basic ! Only downside to the C7 interface is it's got less spec than my MT BikeLeeRS6 wrote: ↑Fri Sep 28, 2018 2:26 pmWhen I enquired about activating it on older vehicles I was told by a very knowledgeable person that the hardware is not sufficient to run Carplay without problem hence it hasn't been activated.

I have my cable coming out the dash as I still have my phone mounted on a custom bracket on the vent, you can route the cable to wherever you like.
