Different size tyres on 21" standard rims

Are there any other decent sizes that allow me to get away from Michelin, Pirelli etc?

Have been thinking 275/35 or 295/30

Anyone got any experience?

Hi Rob - I can't see that going down in size (275/35) should cause any great problem - slightly greater risk of kerbing possible, and marginally less rubber on road so in theory marginally less grip.

I too am interested in the 295/30 option - but for the opposite reason to you - I want to get my new beast onto Mich PS4S - they were absolutely amazing on my C5 and I can't see any reason why they shouldn't be on the C7. I'm pretty sure they'll fit - but like you I'd like someone else to have gone there first just to confirm!

I understand why you wouldn't want the Pirrelli's, but not sure why you don't want Mich PSS? Currently I'm on Dunlop which seem OK in the dry, but I'm not that confident about them in the wet. What had you in mind??

I love Vreds. I had them on the C6 750bhp monster and the Touareg they were awesome and they last. I find Michelin’s a little soft but the C7 is on Contis and they wear great but I can’t help but feel they could have better grip.

Maybe I should try Michelin’s again. Current conti’s are on 23k miles.

I ran Vreds on the C5 for several years - they were good, but I found the Goodyear Assym 2's were more compliant and gave even better wet grip. The Mich PS4S however were absolutely amazing!!

Sounds like the Conti's have worn well ! Perhaps you're not trying hard enough!

If you really want to save money, then I see Nangkang have a tyre to fit......

I'm still trying to get Michelin to answer me as to whether they plan to do our size in PS4S - if not I think it may have to be the 295's with some spacers if needed

A year ago I asked Continental and Michelin if they had any plans to produce the SportContact 6 and Pilot Sport 4S in 285/30/21 and if so, were they going to make an R01 version. I don't think Michelin replied but this is what Continental had to say:
Thank you for getting in contact and I have checked my current databases. Unfortunately, I can see no plans to produce that size in the Sport Contact 6 yet and it can take up to two years of testing by the vehicle manufacturer to have the homologation marking.

Continental tyres will design, extensively test and then produce for general sale a generic model of tyre, specifically intended for a particular sector of the market. At this point the vehicle manufacturers will begin their own testing in relation to their vehicle models allowing for the specific weight, performance and application etc and in particular any precise criteria which they feel is required for use with the intended vehicle, for example additional comfort, etc. This we will be addressed by Continental Tyres. At the completion of this process the appropriate tyres will carry the homologation marking's (example; MO, RO1, N1) and the vehicle manufacturer will provide the recommended tyre inflation pressures.
As a result of the above, there is often a difference between different homologated tyre models, which will improve certain criteria however, this is usually at a slight cost to another criterion. Therefore, changing between generic and homologated tyres you may notice a difference in handling, performance, wear rate and much more. There are no legal or obligatory laws in the UK stating you cannot fit these tyres to different vehicles, but to be aware of the differences and to understand that the changes do have an effect.
