Would tend to agree with you Jezzer....it's a strange first post! - Possibly someone after the same car trying to put you off ??

Still, worth going through the history with a fine toothed comb to be sure for yourself...

I thought that I would investigate further the history of the car due to Espritfan's post. It transpires that this idiot did not own the car and after spending many hours on the phone to dealers and trying to speak to previous owners I have since found the car to have a genuine mileage. Unfortunately because I couldn't speak to these people until this morning the car has been sold over the weekend to someone else. How I would love to meet Espritfan!!! If you're reading this, you'd best get a life. Oh well everything happens for a reason and perhaps I was never meant to have the car in the first place. Does anyone else out there have a low mileage, 2001/02 RS4 for sale or am I dreaming?

I wouldn't be at all surprised if Espritfan turns out to have bought the car...if so then it sucks IMHO.

Sorry you missed out Jezzer...I've got a 2001 car, but not exactly low mileage I'm afraid...few nice mods on though ;-)

Perhaps it'll fall apart.... There was an Avus silver one in the sunday times this week, in fact I think the price has come down to 31k. It's done 27,000 miles I think - that's as low as your going to find!

Also I wouldn't rule out a car that was made a few weeks earlier, ie mine is officially a 2000 car, (December) and after an inspection last week by an Audi tech was described as one of the best examples he'd seen,(37k miles) including the gearbox with I believe was the only difference between the two years anyway? Not wishing to sound 'ooh lucky me' but just making the point that its worth at least looking beyond an '01 car. Good luck, and if indeed 'Espritfan' has pulled one over on you (and it sounds likely as he's one post and gone), then he's probably reduced his chances of any guidance from the experts on here!
RS4 B5. Where it all started.
RS6+ Never to be replaced.
Replaced by: 997 Turbo. Didn't like.
Replaced by RS6. I like(d).
Land Rover Defender. Not as nippy.
Back with C6 RS6
And again C7 RS6

Jezzer, that really is a p!sser. Sorry you missed it mate.

Just one point for you. Don't be too hung up on looking for an 01/02 car. They were all made in one run, and as such all cars came off the line no later than june 01 (someone will correct me if I'm a month or two out).
Therefore it makes sod all difference as to when it was registered.
You may well also find out (as I did when looking) that often it is the older cars that have the lower mileage and fewer owners. I think this is because they don't seem to have changed hands so often, but that is only my observation and others may not agree.

All the est with your search.

Cheers, :beerchug:
John.

Thanks everyone, you lot seem a really friendly bunch. I think it has turned out in my favour as there seem to be even better cars out there than I thought and I am now arranging to look at another one. I'll keep you posted!!!

Does anyone know the dates when they started and ended building RS4s. Is there a stamp showing the build date under the bonnet of the car?

I think someone will be around shortly with a definitive answer....but there's not really any major changes...there's a few differences between very early 2000 cars and the later cars (engine bay layout changed a bit) but apart from that and the 2001 gearbox I don't think there's much difference...

These 51/52 cars are just registered later...they weren't being built at that stage.

To add to that, you may also find the later reg'd cars could just as well be an early chassis no / build date and not a late one as expected (garage trying to command higher prices so got stuck with it for a while).

If you get the chassis number of the car your interested in give me a pm and I'll compare it to the ones in the register. That should give you a rough idea of where in the build sequence it appeared.

I honestly don't think there is any mwerit in buying a later reg or chassi number. There are a limited number of these cars, and what really counts is its condition, mileage, options, and some would say colour too.

Just to let you know, I've just had a pm from the new buyer of AP51 FLK and it is not Espritfan who we thought was trying to buy the car. Why on earth he wrote that he owned this car and caused all these problems I don't know. Could a stop be put on Espritfan making any further postings as I feel it will only be to the detriment of this forum. I have been asked by the new owner to confirm on this thread that the car is indeed the correct mileage as advertised on Pistonheads (35,000 miles) and that when I checked out it's history everything was in order.

The account could be suspended, but the person could always re-register.... It's better to identify them and shame them publicly
