Buying advice/opinions please

Post by Jon_J » Mon Jan 08, 2018 8:06 pm

I looking for some help please.

I’ve seen a car, it’s top money which is fine but I have a couple of niggles.

1. MOT in 2014 had an advisory for misting on both front shocks. It’s done a few thousand miles since. I’ve checked the history and with the garages doing the maintenance and no one has fitted new shocks (standard DRC)

2. No evidence of a carbon clean

3. Steering wheel buttons are terrible so need replacing.

Question: would you be looking for money off for a car with these issues?

I welcome your opinions.

It depends on whether you think the price already reflects these issues or not. Personally I don't think a carbon clean is worth toffee anyway, and if it was done more than a year ago is a pointless selling point.
Worn steering wheels buttons are expected wear and tear for a car of this age but for top money I'd expect this to be either in good condition or have been replaced.

Any issues with the suspension would definitely be a bargaining point for me.

The thing with a CC is that it shows the previous owner knew about the car and was happy to provide upkeep.

Can't imagine they'd budge much on the buttons so you just switch over from the old wheel.

I'd say bring everything up if you get to the point of making an offer. Is it a private or through a trader?

Sort of agree. Mine dynod at 355bhp before the CC and 428 after. Dynod again a year on and it had only lost 10BHP.

Agree the buttons is wear and tear but for top money I’d expect them to be replaced I think?

It’s a trader. Agree buttons are not an issue but something to bring up. The DRC isn’t an issue either I have B16’s. point is it’s top money so I would expect these things to be addressed? Hoping to bargain with it.

It's done well to last that long on original DRC.

Certainly needs money off to get that sorted along with interior niggles. Negligible change from £300 to replace just he 'S' Button trim, then another £90 odd to do the bottom one.

depends how the car is priced to start with
a dealer will laugh at any haggling to do with carbon clean if the car runs fine[so would i if selling tbh its 10bhp]

the buttons etc-its ten years old, fair wear and tear to be expected

misting shocks-deffo a haggling point for a good bit off

In my opinion top money should get you a car with nothing to address. It does depend on your definition of top money though.

This is what I think.

A car is priced in brackets.

Poor, average, good, excellent.

The price difference from the bottom to the top defines the condition of that car. The mileage shouldn’t affect the condition of the car.

As an example:

A poor 100,000 mile B7 could be 10k and an excellent 100,000 mile one could be 13k

For this car, at 13k I would want everything addressed. Wear and tear I get but scratches on the body and dents should be addressed, same goes for the interior. Full history, good brakes and suspension etc.

The 10k car on the other hand I would expect dents and scratches, poor history and so on.

So as you start looking at cars with lower mileage the principle remains the same, the only change is the price moves up.

A 70,000 mile car in poor condition could be 15k and an excellent car 18k

The condition of the top money car (within its mileage bracket) should be wanting for nothing.

So when I say top money I mean within the bracket for that mileage car. The very most you would pay for a car of that mileage.

Does that make sense?

The car is priced at the top of its bracket, that’s my point. Described as a1 condition. It can’t be A1 condition if the interior is scratched?

Maybe I’m being too picky, miss my last one, it was pretty Image
