But then at what point does it become so soulless that you might as well have an S4 or some horrible 4WD derv A4. They'll be equally good in all conditions, if not better with less compromise on clearance and tyres. It has to have a wild side as looks aren't enough, and I'd argue on B9 some of the styling is questionable anyway.

If it was

- a bit wider
- didn’t have the front end looks it does
- had 475PS
- £5k less

I’d say winner.

But what RS4 have the Press ever said was great compared to the M3 or C63 that the can fling sideways at will
Hit the nail on the head
Journos seems to like cars that are edgy and fun for the short drives they have
In reality, an RS4’s big selling point to me is that you can use it everyday in every weather, and still make good progress if you need. That, and be a good looking car
I had an m4 recently for a few weeks, and as fun as it was, it was a <beep> everyday car, and the c63 just looks like every other c class rep Mobile and only comes into its own when the road conditions are perfect, and then it excels
Absolutely agree, I went with the b8 over the outgoing c63 because of modern interior, better gearbox and 4wd security. First November stormy night over twisty and wet roads over Dartmoor and I was 100% certain I’d made the right choice, it really allowed me to press on and would have been in a ditch with c63 I’m sure!

Drove a new c63s last year and it was so planted, the traction was immense, the salesman drove it first and blasted through some roads that I was wincing expecting squirming or TC cut in but not a flicker. So difference now between b9 and c63 is more negligible; interiors both great, styling both a Bit meh, but subtle if you like that sort of thing and both good gearboxes. You can barely use the power and speed of most fast cars these days so the low speed character (I.e v8 burble when driving through town) is what I get a bIt more satisfaction from now, with the occasional hoon when roads allow.

I had an s1 as a courtesy car last week and it was so much fun, felt so fast and got more enjoyment throwing it around, unfortunately you can’t fit a 45kg Doberman in the boot...

At launch I didn't think so. But the more I see it now, the more I'm going off the front and rear bumpers. They're really fussy looking, instead of purposeful, which was the RS4's selling point.

I haven't found the wheel offset specification yet, but I think they fill the arches less now with the reduced track width.

Now 400mm instead of 380mm, but yeah. RS tax shooting itself in the foot.

I guess we'll just have to see how the journo's compare it to the C63
For me, I always preferred the styling in the Rs4's over the C63, but styling is so subjective that it's largely irrelevant

No, but a smaller size obviously. All the other RS models with Ceramic option have the rears too, so I'm assuming the Rs4 just caught up
