Adaptive Xenons ??

Post by Jess » Wed Nov 22, 2017 9:16 pm

I thought the C6 has adaptive xenons, which turn the headlight beams in the same direction as steering inputs. The headlights on my car however don't turn with the steering. I have noticed that when the lights come on initially, they only do a up and down little dance, no side to side calibration movement gets done.

I took it to an Audi dealer today, who told me that adaptive headlights were not available on this.model, and they must be fine as they do the up/down adjustment on startup

Do I need to get this malfunction further investigated or am I misunderstanding what the adaptive lights do ?

Please elaborate...So what do the adaptive lights do then if they don't illuminate the road based on steering input left/right ?

I think speed is a factor. At stand still the unit will calibrate up and down and when you drive the unit will follow the line of the steering wheel input

Yeah mine definitely move left and right when driving but Trups headlight upgrade makes it really obvious when it happens.

Yeah mine had bulbs changed to give a blue white light, but while it does show an overall blueish white light, there is no obvious adaptive to steering effect. My dealer doesn't even believe they are adaptive lights lol.

Adaptive lights are stock in the C6-when you’re driving they should more obvious (although the xenons in the C6 are pretty weak).

Adaptive was an option on the C6. Not all of them have it. Check with Audi if you have them from factory. Or you can check with VCDS.

As ArtofGrunt said, they only move up and down when you switch on to calibrate the levelling, not sideways. If present they may swivel when driving.
I have a non-Audi with adaptive headlights and it's only in some situations that you are aware of the function. Generally tighter turns at city speeds in darker areas and only on dipped beams.

You'll need VCDS or Audi diagnostics plugged in to confirm whether you have adaptive with a fault (and what the fault is) or standard Xenons.
Or check the build Sticker, someone may know the codes to look for.

This is what I got from the 2009 Spec brochure giving the standard equipment on UK RS6, so they all have the lights.

Exterior equipment
Adaptive light including Xenon headlights, LED
daytime running lights, headlight washer system and
automatic range-adjustment

Find someone near you with VCDS, or pay the dealer to diagnose it?

My dealer can't even tell they are adaptive as I said above :)

A half-awake technician will tell just by looking at them and definitely by plugging diagnostics in. :audibash:

I've been driving my car for a few months and only just noticed recently that I thought they were turning with the steering.
Had adaptive lights on my previous Volvo which were much more obvious but really impressed and pleased the C6 has most of the gadgets, even if it is getting on a bit now

Adaptive headlamps are definately an option for C6's

Look for 8Q5 on the build Sticker in your boot or your service book:

PRCode: 8Q5 = Headlight-range adjustment automatic/ dynamic with dynamic bending light (AFS 1)
