Thinking of selling the RS4 and getting a dedicated track car instead. Am I crazy?

Post by dougle_turbo » Wed Nov 01, 2017 6:42 pm

The title says it all really. I want to start doing more track days, but I only have enough parking for 3 vehicles, which are currently taken up the Mrs's daily, a Mini Cooper S, my daily (the van) and the RS4. So short of buying a new house (with more parking) I don't think a fourth car is a realistic option.

I could use the RS4 for track days but given the cost consumables (especially if I wear out the ceramics!), its weight, the fact it's an Avant, and a load of other reasons that I'm sure Ilya has already worked out - I don't think the RS is the right car for the job.

So am I mad? Should I just build an underground car park under the house? Is there another option?

Lol RS4 is absolutely the right tool for the job ;) but in all fairness to expensive to track. And it’s too nice! I say sell the cooper. ;) missus can take public!
But on a serious note, can’t you park one of them on the road? Surely cooper or the van can...
or I am afraid I am going to agree with Bam, underground is the way ;)

Sell the house and move. Four cars in the right number.

So now that’s settled, what track car are you thinking of? Something RWD gets my vote.

Keep the RS4, park the van on the road, and tell us your budget for a track car.

If you do sell the RS4, I want first dibs on the ceramics, please and thank you :thumb:

Would the Mrs notice a roll cage in her cooper S?

No, not mad...get a RenaultSport Clio 197 c.£2.5k and put some gid tyres on it, strip the inside and put loads of go faster Stickers on it...it wont be the fasted thing there, but it'll be good fun...

RWD things worth considering are 350z like things...

I looked at installing a carlift for a property I was considering once. Would solve the dilemma and you can even get double ones.

Looks cheap.

Kinda adds another layer of security too.

Depends on the property and what value it would add by gaining parking spaces. Doubt it would cover the cost on your typical average UK property though.

Cheapest quote I had for a double width fitted was £27k inc VAT. Although that didn't include a pit, built to spec though. So a nice and affordable option

This. is. awesome. Didn't Batman have one of these? If I put it in front of the bedroom I could just jump straight out of the window into the van/RS/track car. Wouldn't want to forget the handbrake.....

I may look into how much the actual lift is, building it wouldn't be difficult.

Probably not Faisal, or, perhaps I could get it as a Christmas present 'because I care about her safety'.

The road is a single carriageway cul de sac, and its right next to Twickenham Stadium so I prefer not to park on the road if I can help it. I once left the van on the road during a game and it had about 20 pints of half-drunk beers on the roof - cheers.

I'm thinking of going the tried and tested Clio Cup route to start with, and then go from there. That said I'm tempted by a E46 M3, or perhaps an old boxster not really sure. Sadly I don't have the time for a full build at the moment, so something already track focused is what I'm thinking. Budget is 3-4K if I keep the RS (which seems to be the general consensus). If not £10-15K.

Si you have first dibs on the ceramics!

F***ing genius

Better brakes and bucket seats for safety too

Remap and weight reduction for "better efficiency".

Halfway there Image

In all seriousness - I'm glad I got a "cheap" track dedicated car: it's loads of fun, and it's totally different driving something on track you're not all that bothered about putting into a wall.

It'd be a shame to let go of that RS though.

Could you go halves on a track car with someone else, and have it live at their place?

Sell wife's Mini. Replace with mk2 John Cooper Works GP. It'll keep her in doors happy and you'll be able to steal it for trackdayz innit. They hold decent value, too.
Job done.
You're welcome.

That’s not a bad shout Faisal. Dougle I’ve got a caged E36 on joint ownership... it lives in my garage keeping warm and dry, so I’m pretty sure he’d be happy for you to pay it’s keep instead... or a three way?
