Secondary cat delete

Post by bal » Wed Aug 30, 2017 4:40 pm

Hi guys,

Just a quick question on getting the secondary cat removed, how much louder does it make it? I was thinking of leaving the standard back boxes and just getting an exhaust company to fit some straight through pipes. As I use the car a lot on the motorway with the little one I don't want much/if any drone but a better sound when giving it the beans so I thought this may be a good compromise?

Thanks
Bal

Hi Bal,

i have a std exhaust with secondary cats removed (MRC are well practised at this, and i kept the cats just incase) been very pleased with the result and not had any MOT issues either just in case your thinking that too.

ref noise? i prefer it, much more lower rumble without being obnoxious, i'd love something more but i live in a very quiet neighbourhood and often leave for work early, thus don't really want to become target of much venting etc. The main issue is the cold start, with the 2nd cats removed this is a lot louder (imagine a milltek would be great fun but i wouldn't dare) now you can map the cold start out, or fool it into stopping but i haven't done that, and actually quite like it.

so for me this is as loud as i think i can get away with, but to give you a little more of an idea, my drive is typical length, normal double width estate road at the end with another house directly opposite. the other day i back the car out out of the garage onto the drive and left running (whist i got some stuff out of the garage, all the while it started on cold start then got quieter), with the back pointing at the neighbour opposite...

maybe he was having a bad day, maybe he was looking for an excuse to vent, but i soon had an irate neighbour shouting at me from the other side of the street complaining his house was vibrating and did i need to leave the engine running? so for me it give as much more noise as i can get, i've noticed no drone on long journeys and have very young children (the other car in the stable being a std S5 is worse)

i'm sure you wont have any problems with drone and it sounds better than std when the right foot gets heavy. sure i'd like more presence, but based on above ain't gonna happen...
hope this helps, shout if any other q's

There is no drone with these cats removed and a catback non res milltek system. You will be fine. You can get the cold start feature removed at MRC.

That's perfect, exactly the answer I was hoping for. I'm pretty much the same as you, I live on a quiet road so didn't want something that would annoy the neighbours.

I don't suppose you have any videos of it idling and maybe on the move?

should be able to sort some videos of both cold start and normal idling.

on the move could be a little more tricky (take a little more time) but good excuse to find the time ;-)

As much as I'd love a milltek I couldn't see myself being very popular with the neighbours!!

Sure, I was trying to highlight that there was no drone likely with the smaller exhaust mod you were planning. Mine does a healthy impression of an earthquake without any drone :)

The only thing that rattles my house more than my car at idle in the drive are the Chinooks that we regularly get flying over a couple of hundred feet.

Another one for backing up the secondary Cat delete / standard back boxes working nicely. It definitely helps make the car sound better without being obnoxious. I don't notice a lot more noise cruising on the motorway but it sounds a lot better when you do want to open it up.

i also try to compete with Chinooks, combined with Apache squadrons training, they always win away from the lights though :-(

my folks have a farm, and some pilots used to pop above distant hedges whilst we were working in the fields with tractors, used to scare the preverbal out of us to start with ;-)

I think YouTube would be your best bet
