Value of a Cat D avant with 60k miles?

Post by Toady1 » Wed Aug 02, 2017 11:23 am

I'm considering doing a trade with a dealer who is selling an avant with 60k miles, but is apparently a CAT D due to having the seats nicked. But no proof that this is the reason.

He is asking £15k for his car. Does this sound high to you fellow owners, considering it is low mileage still, and would be worth about £20k if it wasn't on Vcar....

I wouldn't trust a dealer on his word. I would take a bodywork expert with you to assess the car. You could then put together a deal from there.

I wouldn't buy a car that's been 'written off'. Ok, it may have only had the seats nicked and be completely sound, but, if in the future, for whatever reason, you need to make a claim, i would imagine the insurance company would give you about 10 pence for it. That's just my opinion. There are plenty out there that aren't cat c/d.

I've repaired quite a few cat d and cat c cars and can reliably tell you a few things. When you're buying one sellers will say it's worth 20% less due to the recorded accident, in reality it's probably worth more like 33% less and that's what an insurance company will look to pay you out if the worst happens.

So if the car is at £15k, then he saying an undamaged one in similar condition would be £23k roughly? That's too high, as suggested about £13.5 should be the max as otherwise you'll lose out.

Also heed the advice above and take a body expert with you to review the shape of the car and verify, hopefully, that only the seats were stolen.

Good luck

Bloody he'll you could get so much more privately! If I'd sold my s2000 already I'd be buying it off you! But the offer is a straight swap with said car.

I know, it's a reality check isn't it.
We as enthusiasts like to think our cars are worth more but the reality is.
Having said that, even webuyanycar are offering £16,500 so maybe I am getting done. But it is easy to just trade in rather than having to prep the car for sale, taking to a detailers etc, and worse, having to take people on test drives and contend with 17yr old joy riders and tyre kickers :biggrin3:
I am just driving to dealers on 1st Sept and I will spend no time preparing it.

You'd sell it before September 1st and for around 5k more and that's just for the quick sell

Standard, 41k miles, 1 owner - £15k?! Does it have comfort seats and a round steering wheel?
No matter where you go, there you are.

Throw a couple of quick pictures up here unprepped. Add a very brief account for what you've done to the car and if there are any areas that honestly need attention. If one of us hasn't offered you more and driven the car away before the 1st September you have plan B to fall back on. No need to lets kids drive it, lol.

What were / are you trading it in for anyway?
