Just to bring the thread up to date-typically enough every private buyer turned out to be a) a dealer who wanted to offer £50k as a 'realistic offer' (I had to point out the fact that other dealers had offered me £62k for the car so they need to do better than that! And b) flakier than rusty ship. Not nearly as many lunatics as before with the C6 and maybe that's because I kept it off Auto Trader. Some of the jellyheads (mainly from Midlands and from a certain religious demographic) I had calling me were complete dickheads so I'm glad I didn't have to deal with that again.
Anyhow I went to BMW who did some number crunching and came back with a (drum roll please) brand new 750i!
Seeing as I'm not a) a chauffeur and b) a lunatic who wants to buy a brand new car that will drop at least 50% of its value in 6-12 months that was a no.
So Audi are dangling two carrots at the moment- S4 Avant with nearly all the options and an A7 Black Edition TDI. Both brand new as that's the only way for them to work my neg equity in. Thoughts? My initial one is leaning towards the S4 as it's a new platform and bang up to date and also less of a barge than the A7 although in reality not much difference in poke. The A7 gets replaced late next year am told so that will affect residuals. Hell of a car though and they do look the nuts.
Thoughts?

Done something similar to you.

New F10 M5 only kept 6 months could not live with RWD and rain. Went old school 996 911 Turbo (<beep>), chopped it for a gtr-r35, too extreme for every day sold it and bought a new C7 RS6 like you it did not float my boat. chopped it back to Audi for old RS3 mistake so chopped it for new S3. I have now finalised realised I like big fast comfy cars (its taken a while  ) so chopped that for a new S7 black edition.

Reason why I bought it. Very rare, looks fantastic (IMO) fast, comfy, magic deals around and loads of room to play with and tune.
BMW 540i
2018 GTR
F90 M5
X3MC
RS3 Saloon
RS7 FL best car I've owned. No faith in turbo oil screen (turbos failing) or sticking oil scraper ring causing missfires.
F10 M5 LCI still no rear grip lol
S7 black Edition Too big and heavy
S3 8V FL DSG 310ps, road noise is a joke
RS3 8P Rubbish
C7 RS6 Fantastic car but missed playing
GTR R35 800bhp, too extreme, crazy fast though
911 Turbo Remapped. Hated it
F10 M5, awesome but no rear grip
RS6 V10 700BHP crazy
Porsche Cayenne Turbo S 600bhp

The new 7 series is very nice and the B7 Alpina is the biz with all wheel drive. I think the S4 and A7 will still shed a load of cash.

Alpina is great for exclusivity and are awesome cars (had the Roadster and you didn't see many around) but the big flagship cars like S Class and 7 Series will lose money like a boulder off a cliff. Petrol ones even more so. Plus....who really wants to drive one as their personal car?! If it's a chauffeur owned one sure as the car is working for you. I can't think of a bigger depreciating asset. All cars bar the very few will lose money...my thoughts are that the new A4 platform has only just begun it's life cycle recently whereas the A7 is coming to the end of its next year.

Steve
I assume you didn't buy the C7 For the load capacity ?? If space isn't an issue it's which ever floats your sinking boat 😂 At the end of the day it's trying to balance the books so to speak.

Ha ha the 'sinking boat'...lessons learned and all that. It's all about dealer contributions and absorbing the neg equity in the RS. And it has to be a new car, would love to go for second hand but I'd need to put a load of cash in to get clear. Current dealer contributions for A3 platform are around £800 (unless you want a cabrio which is higher -no thanks) whereas the A4/5 platforms is a lot more. The A7 contributions are over £10k currently so that's pretty impressive. Can't help but feel the S4 will hold more water than the A7 especially next year when it gets replaced? RS3 Saloon would be nice however again it's all about contributions (I'm not prepared to sink £5k of my own folding into getting out of the RS as it defeats the objective) and all the RS3 allocations have been snapped up. It's not the best situation to be in but the numbers need to match up. S4 looking the favourite at the moment.
As for a 7 Series I realise that some people like them as their own cars but they are seriously in the minority and to see how much money they lose look at classifieds for nearly new ones. They haemorrhage money like nothing else. Same as S Class and A8.

Insane lease deals on A8 Black Editions. Cost over 2yrs wouldn't even cover 50% of the depreciation over that term.

Cost over 24mths around £13k
