Driving licence
Driving licence
Can anyone tell me for sure if the old style green paper driving licences are still valid. After looking on the internet I'm not entirely sure.
Iv not had a change of address for 20 years or so and not needed to send it off for endorsements, Iv not had any problems when hiring car abroad either but was just wondering if anyone on here might know if it's still ok to use in the UK, or should I now have a photo ID one.
Cheers for any pointers

Re: Driving licence
No, the paper counterpart was ditched one or two years ago if you already had a photocard

Re: Driving licence
If you have the older style, paper only, licence (no photocard) they are still valid.
Re: Driving licence
If you have plastic ID and the paper counterpart - You can ditch the paper bit - or store it as a feature "treasure". It's definitely not valid for use anymore.
Re: Driving licence
I have the old style paper one saying it expires in 2035
Iv never had a photocard one.
Thanks for clearing that up guys.

Re: Driving licence
I think they have plans to replace the old paper ones at some stage, not sure of the date though.
I have one of those and it works fine, including car hire abroad.

Re: Driving licence
I have both. That way if I get in trouble abroad I can leave one of them with the cops. Bit like a lizard.

Re: Driving licence
They might be planning to deliberately set an end date, but eventually they will all expire so will naturally die out. Added to that, if you chage any details like address then you will get a new type licence so that helps speed up the process. We will probably have some new kind of ID chip inplanted under our skins before long anyway and they can scan us like a tin of tomatoes.

Re: Driving licence
I find the photo card licence really useful for every day things when ID is required. Every time I hire a car abroad I go well prepared with photo card paper licence and the code for any points I may have earned
All they ever want to see is the photo card.
