Are rs4's are unreliable as they seem?

If not interested in the performance of the RS4 why not opt for the S4 Avant instead?

something special about a rs4,just look at the rs2 compared with the same age s4.

Bit of a funny question but i didn't want to start a new thread but does anyone know how a 996 tt peformance compares with a chipped rs4?

Theres not alot between them in a straight line,I bought my rs4 from a main agent but met rs4stevo the previous owner when i picked it up,Went out in them both back to back different animals but similar performance.996tt was pulling hard when high in the rev range but the rs4 felt like it had more power earlier,If they had got mine ready for me on time it would of been nice to put em head to head but hey they only had two weeks to service and fit new brakes ha ha

Correct me if I am wrong but it is worthwhile making the point that we are talking (or lengster1 was) about a stage III modified RS4 running about 460+ bhp as a comparison to the 996TT.....otherwise forgeddaboutit

So I can't complain at all. And given the ridiculous performance, fuel economy hasn't been too bad (about 100 miles less per tank than my S3 did).

How many miles was that then ? How much does the tank hold ?
Promised myself to have one, if only for a year. Fuel is the only real concern as bro runs the local Audi workshop.

Fuel a "concern"..define the limits of your concern! There is a posting somewhere about fuel consumption on the RS4 - I think it is pretty damn good - I get 21½ mpg whereas my previous S4 only gave me 1 more than that. Look at the fuel consumption figures for cars of similar performance and price and many of them are well below 20. Many other high performance cars also have ridiculously short service intervals too.

Then again if you are not going to use the performance of the RS4 you'll achieve far better fuel consumption. But I can't imagine anyone having an RS4 and not using its potential!

I've said it before, and I'll say it again...."You are only here once...Live a little, buy an RS4 then live a lot"!!

Yeah, I'd say normally about 230 miles from a tank. If you do a lot of motorway miles then you can get up to about 280. My old S3 used to do about 340 to a tank (same 60L tank I'm fairly sure). What kind of car are you currently in and how does it do on consumption?!

The tank is 66 litres (Exactly the same as the S3) but you have to bleed it with that little button in behind the fuel cap to get the last 6 litres in. I find fuel consumption varies very little with driving style. My S3 could do close to 40mpg if I was being really careful but I tended to average 28mpg :D

The RS averages 22mpg (Stage II) If I'm careful 25mpg!! Even if I'm really pushing it, it will still do 19mpg. Track days are obviously quite different :<beep>_you:
As Paul says, that's not why you buy a car like this. I drive a diesel Clio to save money not my RS. I think you simply have to ignore mpg with an RS4 and just look at the 'miles left' read out. If you can't do this drive something else :bigwave:

Drive an S3 at the moment. Averaging about 28mpg. If I potter about 32mpg. Can't really afford another car to use. Already two in the family.

Hi Doc,I think that was just the comparison he was after, comparing a tuned rs4 to a 996tt (tuned also mildly with a fabspeed),but yeh im not sure a standard one would compare so well.

Never watched the actual mpg, but for the levels of performance on offer its very good, ive had cars with much less performance but similar fuel bills!230 ish on a full tank seems to ring a bell with mixed driving.

Agreed, I seem to get about 250 miles to the tank but quite frankly its not something that ever entered my head when buying the RS4, simply not a consideration. Around town I am averaging about 22mpg :bigblink:

Bought mine 2.5 yrs ago with 20K on the clock. Done about another 55K in it with only a few problems, although more main failiure than unreliable. Camchain and tensioner needed replacing - under warranty. A week later the turbos blew - coincidental ? errmm. However all replaced under warranty (phew!!) 7K - top tip - buy the extended warranty ! Had to replace rear discs at about 45K - not too costly though.

All in all an awesome car, and has been mentioned it is a match for the Porsches and ferraris etc, and costs nothing to run by comparism - and can carry 4 people and lots of beer in the boot at the same time !

And I do find the thougt of an RS4 just as a `cruiser' interesting ...
Buy one - you'll love it.
