Re: New Police tactic using other drivers dash-cams as evidence
From a computer forensics and Chain of Custody point of view, an expert could easily call into question the validity of such footage. However, if the data was handed over to LE correctly, then I feel the footage is indefensible. i.e. my main point, if the raw footage can be verified then the cops have something, if it has been uploaded by a member of the public, then that's not good enough. It could be argued that post-processing, dropped frames or editing would be spoliation, throw it out of court, next case.
In all though, it takes a new kind of arsehole to post up videos of other people's driving.

Re: New Police tactic using other drivers dash-cams as evidence
This is the problem I think-there are plenty of pinch -mouthed curtain twitchers who read the Daily Heil and froth at the mouth full of self-righteous indignation out there....these are the sorts who will be 'doing their civic duty' and sending 'evidence' of what they will perceive as 'dangerous driving' straight to the authorities. I used to live next to one and she once told me to move my car as it was 'blocking her view' (of two trees and a car park in reality). Threatened to report me to the Council....and then quickly realised she'd picked on the wrong person (my banter and sarcasm level was set quite high that day
) and scurried indoors saying 'well all this proves is that you have a total lack of respect for your neighbours'
The report is about North Wales which is historically very anti-progressive driving, the old Chief Constable had a wild weed up his a55 about speeding if I recall correctly. Hopefully this trend will stay in N Wales but probably not. Hopefully they'll get so flooded with footage from the above group that it'll get canned unless it really is idiotic behaviour.

Re: New Police tactic using other drivers dash-cams as evidence
In the case of an accident, I'd have no problem with dashcam footage being utilised to prosecute should it be deemed necessary.
It's just corduroy trouser brigade, whom feel that it’s their sole purpose in life to report you for overtaking them. That would lead to a vast amount of police time being wasted. In fact, I would wager that they'd get so many after a while, that it would actually backfire on the Police. Should they be encouraged to invite film footage being uploaded.

If the police implemented this they would have to start paying me a hefty salary, they would make £££££s on the 30+ people I see everyday sitting in the middle lane on the motorway.

Re: New Police tactic using other drivers dash-cams as evidence
Why would you though? I'd not report anything to the police unless I was forced to by Court etc. Crazy world we live in ... speed cameras, cctv and now idiots with dash cams.

If it's a crash, then I see it as a good thing as there are plenty of scam artist c-units out there. I have many a cumstain brake test me every week and these need taking off the road.

Re: New Police tactic using other drivers dash-cams as evidence
I cover 60,000 miles pa in my truck and 8,000 pa in my private car. I see so many numbskulls on the road on a daily basis that I couldn't possibly record all their details, if I could I'd be a multi million.

Re: New Police tactic using other drivers dash-cams as evidence
My thought are did I give that person permission to record my number plate or car, no. What about Article 2 right to privacy? Sue the person doing the recording!
Unless the cam was seized by the police and they extracted the footage themselves from the memory card which will show all footage recorded and recover deleted material then the owner could also find themselves in a bit of bother if they have been seen to speed.
Recordings that have been emailed or uploaded are open to scrutiny.
For accidents I don't have an issue either

Re: New Police tactic using other drivers dash-cams as evidence
The fact that drivers are being encouraged (by N Wales Police currently) to send in footage to a dedicated address is the problem. Then you will have those who suffer from the 'British Disease' of jealousy (aka 'you have nicer things than me and therefore I hate you') who will try and dob you in if you overtake them on a clear road.
As we've all highlighted though hopefully if it does spread then there'll be so much footage being sent in by pedantic idiots that it will get flooded and unworkable as a concept.

Unfortunately, recording in public is completely legal. You'd be laughed out of court.lushman wrote: ↑Sun Jun 11, 2017 4:45 pmMy thought are did I give that person permission to record my number plate or car, no. What about Article 2 right to privacy? Sue the person doing the recording!

Re: New Police tactic using other drivers dash-cams as evidence
I have heard about this for quite a while now.
About 12 months ago I had an "encounter" with a biker where he undertook me unnecessarily and close. I then smoked him on a stretch of dual carriageway (wasn't a big bike). At the next set of traffic lights he was giving me a load of <beep> pointing to his helmet camera, saying that he had everything on camera and he was gonna submit it to the police. Never heard anything, he would only end up incriminating himself with the undertaking manoeuvre!
