Gearbox servicing

Post by longman h » Thu Jun 01, 2017 5:55 pm

Do these gearboxes need to be serviced every 40k or so like the C6's?

Interesting to know if I get into a car with a few more miles.

Was it 40k on the C6? Normally do the C5 around 20k.
I would suggest contacting either UNit20/MRC and see what they think. But it will require the oil being changed to help longevity. Probably be around £200-300, not too bad if thrown in with a full service.

Supposedly "lifetime" fill in less powerful cars.

Same as before then, which definitely isn't lifetime.

I reckon go with 40k.

I know this is not the same but on recommendation from MRC I had VW change the box oil in my V10 Touareg. VW were shocked difference the change made and although it is a lifetime fill apparently, they would be recommending it from then on...

The oil is stressed, get it changed.

Audi say the GB's are "sealed for the life of the car" but ZF (who actually make the box) said change the oil every 62k miles (100k KM) or 8 years for ANY GB they make! - https://www.zf.com/corporate/en_de/afte ... ang_1.html

It's a sealed for life unit according to Audi

They say that for all their boxes. BMW say exactly the same thing for the ZF gearboxes they use as well.

They all base the life of the box on something stupid like 100,000 miles which is massively inaccurate.

For £300 odd, why wouldn't you...? I had to change a box on the C5, now its a different motor but even though I sourced a used box, by the time you throw in fitting, you are looking at £5k+.

It is a no-brainer IMO

The fluids supplied to ZF (Pentosin, Shell etc.) are designed to "wear" with the transmission and the TCU adjusts accordingly throughout the life of the trans. Therefore, if changing trans fluid on sealed-for-life units it is best to get into the habit early rather than wait 10 years and 100k miles. Also bear in mind that it is almost impossible to drain more than 1/2 of the oil as 1/2 is trapped in the TC. Still, 50% new fluids helps, but again, start this early in its life if possible. Changing the fluid 2-3 times in succession will help replace at least 75% of the old fluid but it can get expensive, especially as the ZF 8HP uses ZF Lifeguard 8 at £20 per litre!
