Anyone know about Mitsubishi Outlanders? Shoguns?

Post by Shoppinit » Tue May 16, 2017 8:16 am

Having been unable to find a decent XC90 I'm now looking further afield for a 7 seater with a bit of character.

One that has come up on my radar is the Mitsubishi Outlander. Another is the Shogun. 2005-2008 I don't know anything about either of these models or the brand in general.

Anyone got anything good or bad to say about them?

Thanks.

Has Stretch just bought one of these? The wife mentioned he'd got another motor the other day but can't remember of it was a shogun or outlander.
previous- Pug 205 gti, 306 gti, 309 gti Goodwood.
Audi S3, S4 V8 avant.
Porsche Macan Turbo.
Gone but NEVER forgotten - C5 RS6 Misano red avant.

Now - Empty garage

If you don't know where you're going, any road will take you there!

LMAO, while I know my Jap Crap fairly well, I just bought the Shogun last week because I had driven them for over 20 years or so in Grenada, EVERYTHING is pretty straightforward to fix/mod and the 4 is sitting on the driveway not being driven, due the Gearbox behaving worse than after I threw the best part of 4k at fixing it last month........

I wanted a XC90 initially, but I knew one well for years that a friend bought and he had no end of horrors from the auto box on it and he was far from alone. His words recently - "XC90 gearbox and transfer box are pants.... mine is now a 2wheel drive XC90 as the transfer box bevel gear and sleeve failed twice now, and mines not even the T6 !!" The drive from the XC90 is far more refined IMO, the Shogun is a bit agricultural in comparison, but I am so high up that I don't care. Legroom is better then expected, people of your and my height are ok in them and the headroom is fine too, with or without the sunroof.

If cared for, the 4wd systems are pretty bombproof on the later MkII (96-99, could be wrong) Shoguns onward I believe and they take a fair old beating. Auto boxes, certainly on all of the MkIII ones I drive including mine were smooth and easy to fluid filter service too.

Spare and second hand parts are cheap and plentiful, but if possible, I would go for a 2003 facelift MKIII as you get the better centre console display system, with just one or two tweaks externally, front grille and possibly the rear bumper changes from a three-piece system (better IMO) to a single piece rear bumper, can't remember. Mine is a pre-facelift late 2002 but I have the updated centre console fitted and a Parrot mki9200 in there. The display system is RGB input-based, so if you are planning on trying to splice in 3rd party reversing cameras of satnav, factor that in.

All the LWB versions should come with 7 seats and they are removable for weight saving/extra space. You have heater/fan controls in the rear and for cold air, that comes out of vents in the roof, for warm air, that comes out from the between the front seats I believe, which might be via an electric heating matrix mounted somewhere right in the back of the car, OSR corner interior possibly.

I bought mine cheap at £2400 as she needs love but all the essentials on her were solid and she was black. The list of things I have bought for her is impressive, but for peanuts comparably to another, non-Jap tank. Depending on age, the vast majority of them will have wear on the bottom right side of the drivers seat where the leather/pleather cracks through from bums sliding in and out from the height getting in. Getting running board/the elusive A pillar grab handles would help this but it does bother me. I bought a mint condition fully electric drivers seat (all the MKIII ones should be electric, but some may also have lumbar adjust I think) for £100 including delivery.....

You are very high up in one, but to me that is a good thing. I have sat behind both Touregs and Cayennes and scoffed at how I am seeing clear over the roofs on them, but then sad in the knowledge that probably feel a bit less like a rolly poly tractor but I like having the best of all worlds between this car and the others at home. I am also on the larger 285/55/R18 tyres which add to things I reckon. My 3.5 is thirsty at around 14mpg currently, but I think that is partly do the badly welded exhaust and the incorrect Lambda that has been bullet connected in! Pretty quick off the mark too but nothing to write home about once you hit 70-80.

I don't know much about the MkIV ones, other than I would guess that road tax probably isn't great on them and on the Pajero Owner Club forums I don't them discussed all that much.

One major thing to look out for, RUST. Bodywork itself is solid, but on the older ones the undersides don't tend to look pretty. Mine has rust/a couple of sill holes underneath but that I knew that when buying her and it is being fixed up next month. Waxoyl after that before winter comes methinks...

I would honestly go and drive one but at least check the MOT history on it first (sure you would anyway) as that served me well before getting one. Right, enough random crap spouted for now, have to go walk the dogs and hit things in the garden.....

Hi Shop,
We bought a 2012 Outlander at the end of last year as we have another child on the way. Owning the RS6 I didn't want another thirsty beast and since ownership it's been doing over 35mpg even up to near 40 on long runs. The extra seats aren't much cop and build quality is nowhere near Audi but I like it nontheless. It's easy to drive with a 6 speed box and nippy enough when pushed. Some lower models don't have the extra seats but we went for the GX4 which has a big subwoofer in boot, satnav/dvd player and rear camera. It's quite well specced and plenty of space inside. The split tailgate is good for loading stuff in but the newer models don't have this. All in all I think they are a good family car and won't break the bank to run.

One of the guys working with me gave me a lift in his Mitsubisihi 4x4 recently and the first thing I noticed that when it moved it didn't make any noise, turned out to be the hybrid Outlander phev. Now I grew up with Shoguns / Pajeros ever since young aswell Range rovers later on in life but I was actually impressed with the hybrid. The ride quality, the built, even the cabin was not too shabby, best part was he said it gives him on average 45-75 mpg depending mainly if he keeps below the 60mph whilst on the motorway.

Anybody driving below 60 on the Motorway when there are not a Lorry or towing a yuuuge shed on wheels deserves a slap IMO ;). Saying that, I have yet to break 15MPG on my old pre-06 Shogun, but luckily I don't give a Monkey's in the slightest and don't hang around.

All three of my biz partners lumped for Outlander PHEVs on a 24month biz contract. I hate the fucken things, they love them. Having to listen to them standing around every morning comparing MPG on their apps, makes me want to punch them in the face until they're normal again.
I didn't consider that you'd want a Outlander PHEV, Ben, so I didn't bother commenting about them. I've been for a ride in PHEVs a couple of times, I hated them more everytime, it feels very cheap, feck all options. The cheaper Yeti Laurin & Klement I got on 24months biz contract feels like a Rolls Royce in comparison. By all accounts the PHEV isn't really that economical either, especially if you want to run things like, the heater or maybe 'the battery app god forbid'... THE AIRCON! It's the first thing I do when I jump in one of their cars for a lift, I switch the AIRCON on fullbore, not matter how cold it is. They always freak out "WHAT ARE DOING???" *points at the power gauge* "My battery range has just dropped down to 2miles!!!" "Meh, it's hot in here", I say. So do any of these 'normal' things in your PHEV or travel more than 12miles at a time without plugging in and you'll end up burning a lot of dinosaurs. Sure it's quiet when running on leccy but the stereo was still tinny, the whole thing felt tinny. Jap four by fours, for me, are Toyota Landcruisers, the original Aussie school mum tractor, full stop.

LMAO at that reply, mpg is for pewfs. I never have the AC off in any of the cars. If you don't run the AC, sh1t breaks and I like being at the right temperature.

I wanted a Land Cruiser at first as I have driven those a lot too over the years, then a Nissan Patrol, but for no really decent reason you get much older ones for comparable cash and you can't slate an old School Shogun as it can go anywhere like the proper tractors, not the pansywagon pretenders.

Nah, not interested in the leccy one. Preferably a petrol for me but they are like rocking horse pubes.

I like the land cruiser. It's on my list. So is the 7 seater Nissan. Can't remember what it's called.

All good info, chaps.

Agreed on the Petrol, I flat out refused to even consider a dirty Diseasel, but that made things a lot harder for a fairly impulse purchase. Most likely semi-roomy 7 seat Nissan are the Patrol or Pathfinder series but I discounted the Pathfinder for reasons that I cannot remember.
