Next RS6... this time in Black. Does anyone know BX**?

Post by RS2 » Mon May 15, 2017 2:35 pm

Yes, I've gone and done it again... didn't I learn anything last time??

It's yet another dead gearbox'd C5 RS6 but this time... it doesn't move at all no matter which gear you select so I suspect the torque convertor or oil pump.

There are a host of faults in the car so there's work to do.

Does anyone know this car previously?

It's black, black (white pinstripe) interior with carbon effect trim. First registered in Jan 2004 and needs a lot of TLC.

I'd be keen to find out as much as possible about it's history. Yes I did an HPI on it so I know some but it has no service history at all.

I'm wondering where the RS6 door mirrors have gone for one.

Maybe the mirrors are in the gearbox? 😛

Black is my favourite. Just needs alcantara and Ali interior.

Have a look on cazana.com . You need to sign up but stick the reg in and it'll give you everything on the net relating to the car including old sale adds , plate transfers, not history ect . Might throw up some clues to its life

Way back when I was looking for mine I saw a black RS6 for sale near me which ticked a lot of the boxes.

The reg BX kind of rings a bell and the interior was as you describe. Unfortunately it was for sale in Keighley Trade Centre/Motorhub/whatever they call themselves now. And didn't take it any further.

I may well be talking a totally different car though!

Lol they work... I just don't understand why it's got standard plastic A6 mirrors.

I'm not sure that Alcantara would survive around me... ;) I always liked the look of the 'Piano Black' trim but it's rare.

Interesting. The car lived in Blackburn up until 2008 and was serviced by Blackburn Audi. Beyond that I have no service history at all.

I did learn that it was owned by one of the owners of Sigma Cars & Commercials (the owner before the chap I bought it from) but I haven't tried to contact them yet. If they're anything like other car dealers, they'll have thrown everything away that came with the car just in case there's something in there that could come back and bite them!

I popped home at lunch time just to try to get the car parked sensibly on the drive. It was just rolled off the recovery truck at 5am and I went to bed.

These cars weigh a lot! I ended up using every possible tool that I could just to move it back (uphill) by hand and then jacked the back end up and slid it across using my high-lift trolley jack.

Then I spent a few minutes plugged in looking at Vag-com measuring blocks.

The gear selection that the ECU sees isn't instant when going into Reverse, there's a delay where it reads just a couple of lines and then after a few seconds, 'R' comes up. Neutral initially comes up as Z2 and S comes up as Z4 before switching to S. One of the fault codes was for the Range Sensor so I think I'll put that on the list!

Another fault that was there was the oil temp sensor. While watching the readings, I noticed that with the engine running, the gearbox oil temp was flicking between 19 and 20oC and never went above that. My experience previously is that it climbs steadily. Another thing to add to the list although I think that this is part of the wiring loom that sits in the oil.

The other fault code that's present is the normal one of 'Gear Ratio Monitoring' - 'Incorrect Gear Ratio'.

I wonder if there's any oil in it!

What's your plan? Do it up to keep? Do it up to move on? Do it up because you like inflicting pain on yourself etc?

Yup, F125 without a doubt.

Or if no oil is pumped around, then there's no transfer of heat to the sensor which could be working fine.

Maybe not. Worth checking before doing anything else.

Here's a scenario that's not too far-fetched:

1. Car develops gearbox fault. F125 breaks and car goes into limp.
2. Owner takes it to garage who incorrectly diagnose it and suggest ATF change.
3. ATF incorrectly done, fluid level way too low.
4. Garage says "not our fault, there was always a chance that the ATF change wouldn't fix it. You need a new box."
5. Owner says, "screw that" and sells it to MG for peanuts.
6. MG puts a couple of litres of ATF in, changes the F125 and it's as good as new.

Sorted.
But to have a proper diy he has to take the box out anyway.
