RS Vs S ?

Post by Mark-RS » Wed May 10, 2017 3:53 pm

Is anyone able to tell me what the main differences are between them ?

I have been looking at a C5 RS6 for some while now. Ocassionally I wonder if I should save a little longer for the C6 and the nice V10........... :boohoo:

Been chatting to a few friends lately and they have brought up the idea of simply getting an S and saving a huge amount of money in the process. They say they have the same engines but only mildley different.

The only things I can come up with as a counter argument are the following.

I notice the power output is different, even though the engines are the same. But this can be sorted with a map ? Can it not ?

I would "Imagine" the ride is somewhat softer in an S, but then this can be sorted with coilovers ? Can it not ?

And it's about there that I start to run out of anything to say.

So can someone enlighten me ? What are the differences ? Surely there must be more than the above ?

I dont know anything about these particular models but the following are general differences with various S and RS models. May or may not be applicable in this instance (I assume you mean the C6 S6 and RS6).

How about the wider body? More agressive bumpers / grille etc? More equipment as standard. Wider track? Bigger brakes. You mentioned the suspension already. Does it have uprated anti roll bars? What about better weight distribution with battery in boot? Lighter body panels such as aluminium wings and bonnet.

Correct, that's exactly what I meant, and you have certainly added a few more things to the list, although the C6 RS6 doesn't really appear to look all that much different, bodywise at least.

Doesn't really have large arches or anything that I have noticed. Not like the C5 RS6 which has nice bulges :D

It might not be that noticeable but it certainly had bigger box arches. Allows you to fit bigger and wider wheels with lower offsets to clear those big brakes.

C6 wise I'd say there's a significant difference between the S and RS variants. I can remember in my old C6 having a short tussle with an S6 (V10) and my stock RS6 smoked him with ease. Like M Performance and M cars they are designed to be different. In Audi S is semi skinned - RS is the Full Monty.

C6 S6 doesn't have two turbos attached to the v10 for starters.

Put them side by side and you'll notice the difference in width. You are right though, the flared arches aren't as pronounced as the C5, which I've always liked the look of really. Not sure I could live with the 5 speed auto nowadays and the only one I drove, handled like a barge (C5, but then the C6 want a damn sized better). All could be rectified with suspension, arb's, tyres and geo I would think though.

Not fancy a good B7? Audi at their finest really...

Buy the S if you're asking that question. RS is not for you.

but to add to the above and to your original question, the RS's are designed with other components that are appropriate for the uplift in performance vs the S modes. e.g. breaks, transmission and other such things. mod the S and to be safe add better breaks for stopping + prepare to be bent over when the gearbox goes.

or buy an S-line TDI and tune it...RS is much more than an S with a remap...

The RS is to the S what a Thai ping-pong ball projectionist is to a Brighton ladyboy.

If you look over my question again, it's my friends that have posed the question to me. It's an RS I have wanted all along and 99% sure it's an RS I will end up with. But when asked the question about the differences, I was left with very few answers that could seemingly not be fixed/sorted with simple mapping and suspension change.

All you need to say to them is "It's an RS you tools! It looks the bo**ocks", so shut it".

And then race them off the lights.

And tell them with a remap and exhaust you will have 800ps. The S6 won't.

Also, i stand by my reply...if you cant answer the question, then the S is for you! even if the answer is the above (its pretty much why I've got the rs4!)...

Just get one, get pics up then we can all pick holes in it for a week, then you'll be one of us, and you can join in the noob baiting from then on! :bigblink:

P.s. We wont all pick holes, just Bam...

As long as the RS badge on the grille is in the right place Bam will be happy.
