RS4s - Hard to Value?

Post by SHS » Thu May 04, 2017 9:55 am

Hello all

First post, a wealth of information on here and I'm sure its been touched on before, but I'm in the market for an RS4 as new baby and the E92 M3 are proving very difficult to live with but I refuse to waive goodbye to a V8! So the M3 is up for sale and I'm set on an RS4 - they look so good and are really quite rare on the road.

The issue I'm finding is that the values e.g. on the audi approved website seem a bit all over the place when I compare year versus mileage versus equipment. For instance the cheapest on there is at 33k, and has okay mileage but less equipment than some. Do ceramic brakes put people off, is a 2012 plate that much worse (I know there was an update to the models for 2014)?

There are 3 cars at around 36k, on the approved website. The Harold Wood one seems very good to me re equipment, but would it be better just to go for the lower mileage?

Apologies if this has been done to death - I know E92 M3s so well, and it seems odd that a 10 year old M3 can have a lot of the same equipment/more than a 2014 RS4 and yet these options seem to be a massive premium on the approved website!

Thanks for any feedback!

Welcome. Mileage is less of an issue as time goes on other than ultra low ones if you plan to store it. The issue with them is volume, there are just so few, and colour/spec.

You need an MY14 really as it had a few nice updates.

A lot of people say essential spec is the sports pack (wheels, exhaust, suspension etc), pano roof, 3g+ high with audi connect and advanced key.

Losing or adding just one of these can be 2k easily. There are 3 audi approved rs4's with pano roof for sale now.

Then there are lots that should be standard like memory seats/mirrors, heated seats, hill hold etc.

The personal stuff like black optics vs. silver.

I have one for sale, I'm not desperate to sell but you may want to have a look as it is a real nice one.

Patience first and foremost! Know what you want and what your happy to negotiate. If your sharing car then memory seat is a must, the advanced key is a theft issue and concern in my book (X5 taken of drive, dogs didn't hear a thing)! Tech pack high, comfort pack, sports pack, black pack etc...in fact just buy Deano's (he's on here) and don't pay dealer premium. If you are getting finance and buying private is an issue there are garages that will do the deal on yours and the sellers behalf and this generally cost a grand. Happy hunting and always consider how easy the one you buy will be to sell. Apologies as you probably know all this but it's good to get confirmation from others. Good luck!

Thanks very much chaps - sports pack seems like a must. I had similar concerns with my m3 re comfort access as the advanced key.

Does the other stuff like audi connect etc seem to be getting dated or still a good option?

Deano's yours looks absolutely cracking. Its probably a touch too much for me and I am looking to finance though and keep my cash as my wife is on mat leave and dangerous leaving her with a credit card and no earnings coming in (!), so that's a very useful point re the finance for private.

I'm open to a conversation. Like i say i don't actually want to sell it but having my arm twisted. How much is the M3 worth?

I'd do 38 as it stands or 37 if i sell some of the mods (but any buyer would regret not having them for a grand).

The 3g+ high audi connect is still great in my opinion. Google maps, street view, excellent dynamic traffic, stations, web POI's etc.

Advanced key is no easier to steel if you put them in an RF wallet at night. Remote cloning is not easy or widespread.

The main way they are nicked is putting the window through and programming a key via OBD. This is on any key. OBD lock is the way forward but then you're just moving the issue around and risk them coming in to make you start it...

Where in the world are you?

I'd probably buy it back in 6-9 months

Audi only have 3 with pano roof available and not great spec or colour combos. All 40-45k

Defo not a sales guy! Im on m3cutters if any questions.

The few trade deals on the m3 are not very inspiring and not getting any bite privately.

I spoke to oracle about finance options and they are really not bad and allows me to keep some cash in my locker but also looking at a loan to cover the amount. My profession just makes me very cautious so I had set myself a top figure which is why I was struggling to figure out where the values were with the used ones.

I had an ultimate spec ex-press S4 before the RS4 so didn't want to go backwards in terms of spec.

It may become less of an issues as the cars get older, but the cars are 'relatively' expensive still and it would irk me to own a minimal spec car. For instance just about every one has B&O so why buy one without? Even if you don't want B&O it could well put off the next buyer

Took me ages to find the right car. The more I researched the more the prices seemed to make sense. There were some over priced cars last year - and guess what - they didn't sell. Shaks as a dealer puts a few of the Northern Ireland cars in particular

I have the advanced key and the advantages for me far outweigh the negatives. If some low life wants my car they'll take it whatever. Good luck with your search (and Deano's car does look nice....)

It all depends how specific you are on colour, age, mileage and spec.

If you want an approved sub 40k mile, sport pack, pano roof MY14 in grey or blue then its £40k+

The cost of replacing normal discs and pads is little over £1k..

I can't imagine the costs of ceramic ones..

I've been watching prices on these for a few months now.

I'm only looking at ones with panoramic roof and adaptive cruise. Prefer blue or red but tbh colour isn't a big deal. Rest of spec "required" will be price dependent.

I've seen cars at main dealers with sensible miles at 34k and also above 40k. From what I've seen the expensive ones hang around until they drop in price. Main dealer isn't essential IMO. But private sales should be a good chunk less than equivalents at a dealer owing to more risk if you have issues and likely cost of a warranty (I haven't checked but I would be surprised if a decent quality 12mth warranty covering engine and box is less than 1.5k).

As a result I'd find it hard to pay over 37 for any car (I'm not into cars with near zero mileage. They are pointless if you need to use a car, and if you don't your money's better off elsewhere).

Aftermarket upgrades are fine but don't add significantly to the price. As and when I do a deal to move from my B7, the car will be returned to standard and parts sold separately.

37k seems about the bar for cars that are selling with a good spec and 10-12k miles a year. Sub 35k for more miles and possibly with sub par spec (though as others have noted, I personally wouldn't go that route unless the car was very cheap). Being patient a couple of k under that would seem eminently feasible.

I'm ideally hunting for a cost to change of 20k. I can see value at that point, but not really at 25+ (at which point I'd likely buy a 997 4S instead).

Prices noted above are ticket prices, so would expect room to negotiate as and when the time comes.

Ref quantities... I'm seeing between 7 and 15 typically for sale at any one time, and plenty of additions to the market coming through. I expect that position to be the case for at least the next 18mths as 3yr lease terms come up.

Prices on these are only going one way and have a bit to go yet IMO. There's no reason to think they won't follow the B7, so in a few years they'll be mid-20s. Not overpaying now is therefore a strong consideration IMO.

My pcp rate over 4yrs is 3.9 APR, not the flat rate as that is a mis-leading figure that doesn't reveal the true cost. Another lender I've used is Alphera (BMW Finance) whose rate was 5.9 APR hope that helps

I'd be tempted by a B7 and looking to release about 20k Image

I don't have acc though. That was one of my requirements because in my opinion it looks w@nk with what looks like 1 odd fog light.
