Yeah and that can make it really scary. my GTR-R35 had over 750bhp and in the wet it was not as sure footed as you would expect. as it was RWD until it needed the fronts I often found myself way too sideways until the fronts kicked in. I did not like it. did not inspire confidence

Re: RS6 C7 to NEW M5?
Mind you I had that first thing this morning after defrosting the car (it's nearly May! Wtf), turned into the road and put a little bit of power down as a car was coming and the RS wanted to go sideways. Little bit of correction (the car did most of it tbh) and away we went. In the M135i I would have spun like a top. However, NOT what I wanted to be doing 30 seconds into my morning drive!

Agreed, mine was high power and had to be run in "r" or traction off mode even in the dry.Paulm wrote: ↑Thu Apr 27, 2017 11:56 amYeah and that can make it really scary. my GTR-R35 had over 750bhp and in the wet it was not as sure footed as you would expect. as it was RWD until it needed the fronts I often found myself way too sideways until the fronts kicked in. Mainly RWD when accelerating hard and had it in a few awkward positions.
RS6 seems a lot more sure footed tbh but equally no where near as responsive.

Re: RS6 C7 to NEW M5?
I'm curious about the new M5 but can't help but wonder (other than track days) when I would decide to turn off AWD on UK roads. The problem is that you get very used to AWD and "unlearn" RWD. This happened to me only two days ago when I traded in my (generally brilliant) C63s ED1 coupe for a Nogaro RS6 PE.
When I was driving the C63 almost exclusively I became quite familiar with it and what to expect from it. Most of the time I ran it in Sports mode and it was enormous fun. There was only one occasion during that period where the car did something a little unexpected. However, for various reasons, I hadn't driven the C63 for awhile (5 weeks) and had been driving mainly AWDs. It was my last drive with the C63 and I put my foot down on an (almost) straight section of road but didn't do it smoothly and the tyres hadn't warmed up enough. It was a tunnel vision moment as the car went somewhat sideways and I considered, in what seemed like an eternity, just what discount I would have to provide for a car covered in cow field. Fortunately I wasn't in race mode and the car along with a little muscle memory kicked in and I avoided the field.
My point is that one has to drive a powerful RWD car quite a lot to become familiar with it. Having the option to turn off AWD on this new generation sounds great but would I ever dare turn it off in normal on road circumstances after running it with AWD for lengthy periods? Probably not.

Re: RS6 C7 to NEW M5?
That's a good point & one i'd not really thought of. Like you though i flipped between RWD/AWD as the wife's new XC60 which is AWD got the most day to day usage & my M5 for longer journeys but never felt i needed to adjust as it was obvious the M5 was different given it had 3 times the power/torque. I guess if you had an M5 & RS6 it would be a bigger factor as you'd not want to get the drives the wrong way round.DragonRR wrote: ↑Thu Apr 27, 2017 9:41 pmI'm curious about the new M5 but can't help but wonder (other than track days) when I would decide to turn off AWD on UK roads. I'd assume this ability to switch to RWD would be to heighten the fun in the Summer & of course on track, but when conditions are not so great it would be left in AWD. Judging by the AMG info it's not a simple button press to switch to RWD, you need to change a few settings to access the RWD only option & i'd guess the same will apply to the M5.
I also think in good conditions the differences are not as obvious as either drive option wouldn't be struggling for grip & thus would you really notice? Was watching a YouTube clip last night of the new MY17 GT-R vs. 991 Turbo S vs. McL 570S vs. R8 V10+ & on paper the R8/Turbo S should have taken the win, but the 570S was the victor & that being the only one of the 3 to be pure RWD. Had it been damp then the results would have been completely reversed. What was a little funny is how the GT-R was left for dead, yet 3-4yrs ago it was the Supercar slayer, however Nissan still claim on paper it's the fastest of the 4 above.

Re: RS6 C7 to NEW M5?
The 0-60 on the GTR is a mystery to me. Perhaps it varies much more than normal between cars or maybe Nissan "tweak" their test cars a little. Nothing normally beats the 911 in less than perfect conditions... well I'm excluding certain *ahem* electric vehicles of courseW8PMC wrote: ↑Fri Apr 28, 2017 7:45 amThat's a good point & one i'd not really thought of. As you may remember I have a 911TTS (still!) and was using that as my second car, the C63 being the primary. For the last six months AWD was a novelty and I didn't need to re-learn anything. However when I had my second gap not using the C63 I was using the 911, and a Merc AMG GLE 43 AWD which is pretty nippy so I re-learned being spoilt and lazy with AWD

I have to say that I've been quite surprised how much quicker the PE version of the RS6 is over my 2013/14 pre facelift RS6. Maybe it's a combination of software improvements on the gearbox and engine plus the extra HP but it doesn't feel far off my 911 which was not the case at all with my original RS6.

Regarding Dragon comment
Much admit now I'm used to my PE...it feels as rapid as my mapped pre FL standrad car.
Deffo feel less torque but in real world conditions more than quick enough....makes me wonder about whether to bother mapping it??

Re: RS6 C7 to NEW M5?
I think if that's how it feels then I'd question if it was worth just doing a map with nothing else (exhaust etc) the deciding factor for me being it's a brand new car and warranty is full and map is only circa 40hp over PE model...

Re: RS6 C7 to NEW M5?
I was saying the same earlier this week. Even with an MRC map you are looking at just an 80ps increase and lose your warranty. Not worth it for me.
Re: RS6 C7 to NEW M5?
Coming from a stock C6 the C7 is totally different (albeit less 'raw') and noticeably quicker low down. Tuning really doesn't feel necessary right now but maybe 6 months down the line may be the way I go. Still got just under 2 years original warranty left. Sports exhaust is great but still need more noise (the Milltek on my C6 was booming although a constant noise-am loving stop/start in traffic!) so the exhaust mod or a full on new exhaust will be called for.

Re: RS6 C7 to NEW M5?
I think if you consider the PE is likely just a map tweak anyway, then you won't get any more power than a pre FL with the same map.
Hence why I said for mine on the dyno I used your looking at 80hp from std and 35ish from a PE.
Happy to be proved wrong but I am certain that a PE wouldn't keep that uplift throughout the tuning range - you'd be looking at near 800hp with exhaust and downpipes

Re: RS6 C7 to NEW M5?
Tempted as I am (and often have been) with re-maps I've been seriously put off after the comments made by the dealer I got the car from. One of his RS6 stock has been TD1'd whilst at a main dealer for an engine fault which he thought was probably not connected with the remap. The same dealer warned me off even having a different exhaust. I was intending to go Milltek tbh so I thought I'd check this with an Audi dealer I've dealt with several times. They strongly recommended against even swapping the exhaust. Apparently Audi have become a lot more strict with warranties and had been claiming that with exhausts the change in back pressure would probably have a detrimental effect on the engine - so warranty void.
