RS ownership over for me !!!

Post by kevconn » Thu Apr 27, 2017 9:55 am

Well, after always wanting an RS4 and eventually owning one for 15 very expensive months, i've decided to bight the bullet and sell the car and it's going to it's new owner on Saturday.

When i first bought the car, i'd done all the usual research and most of the big jobs had been done on the car with 86k on the clock so i thought i would be ok but £3900 later i've decided enough is enough. I took the car immediately to have it serviced when i bought it and a inlet manifold flap problem showed up. I had that fixed and then the oil cooler pipes started leaking so had a Forge cooler fitted and hoped that would be the end of all the problems. A few weeks later one of the radiators started leaking, the front control arms started knocking so that was more expense. Then a few weeks back it started running really lumpy so a Carbon Clean was carried out. The car is running absolutely spot on now and is faultless but i just can't enjoy like i wished for the fear of something else going.

Apart from these problems, which i fully understand can happen to any second hand car, i've absolutely loved the car and it's by a country mile the best car i've ever owned. I really don't want to be throwing any more money at it so that's why i decided to sell it. I know that in a few weeks i'll most likely regret it but i can't justify spending all this money on a car i only do 2-3k miles a year in.

Anyway, thank you all for the advise offered on here when i've needed it and it's been a pleasure looking at some of your motors and i will forever be grateful. I've been on many a forum over the years and i have to say that this one is by far the best, offering free impartial and knowledgeable advice with no idiotic input.

I've had the privilege, albeit an expensive privilege, to own one of the best cars of all time. Thanks again and enjoy your cars :bigwave:

Mines had all those problems according to the service records I obtained with the car.

And thats being serviced by Audi every time until now every 10000kms.

Mine was running rough when I got it but a throttle reset and fixing a vacuum leak restored all the power and now she runs mint.

Maybe you might get one later, but from what I hear and now know about theae cars is they do have alot of very common issues.

Farwell, as your journey ends with RS4... mine has just began.

I'm not knocking the car, apart from the expenditure it's been a joy to have owned it. The amount of comments and looks i get when i drive it have been endless.

All the problems with it have been unseen items that can rear their ugly heads at any time i imagine but the car does have 90k on the clock now and is at the end of the day 10 years old. All the work has been carried out at Unit 20 who have been brilliant and it's not like i don't have the money to fix whatever else is around the corner, it's just that after spending almost £4k in such a short space of time i've decided enough is enough.

Enjoy your car mate and fingers crossed for you that you have many many miles of carefree motoring

Sad to lose anther member but I think that it's fair to say no one on this forum had decided to buy a b7 because of it's low running costs. They are expensive cars but they do give back what you put into them. I guess the question is, does it give back enough to be worth the money going in.... For me the answer is fuch yeah it does.

The next question is, what car is next?

Lol, like i said, i know for sure i'm gonna regret it in a few weeks but i'll have to live with the decision. I'm retiring in a few years and don't really want to be dipping into the retirement fund to keep a car on the road, as much as i like it.

Not 100% sure what i'm gonna be getting but i've got my eye on a couple of cars. Lower mileage and a lot newer and with a WARRANTY !!!!!

Shame to hear that.

I have been soo lucky with mine. I only do around 3k a year and only spent a few hundred in the last year. Full service just. I plan to oil change every 6months as a mileage limit will be too long in time. At 57k I guess the big bills are just around the corner but I love the car. As you said, easily the best car you have owned and I would agree.

What next??

The only car I would consider would be the new RS6 but my goodness its pricey. I shall wait till its made it big drop in price

RS6? I wish, but i'm downgrading to something more economic but good enough that it won't be too dramatic a downgrade otherwise i'll be bored of it in no time at all. Couple of options open to me, just have to decide which way to go and i'm not saying coz you'll all laugh lol

When i actually sat down and worked out what the RS owed me plus the money i'd spent on it, it's probably worked out at just over £2k for the time i've had it but i'm more concerned on what is/was around the corner in terms of future expenditure.

What i'm looking at will cut my yearly Tax/Insurance costs by 50%, that's before fuel costs. Like i've said, retirement is on the horizon and the funds are staying in the bank regardless.

It sounds like you've already done most of the common faults around that mileage apart from the DRC. There may not be much expense needed from now on for a good while.
Has DRC been done already?

I've just had a £5.5k bill for mine for suspension work. That's on top of disks and pads, clutch, aux rad and carbon clean it's had since I got it - would I sell it now? No, because I won't get back the money I've invested in it and I'm buggered if someone else gets the benefit of my expenditure.

So what we can gather from this thread is...

It's probably not a good idea to buy a car from most people that have commented on here as they'll likely sell when it's broken. execpt the OP of course.

RS cars are expensive to maintain, but they deserve to be treated well and the next owner will no doubt expect that.

Huh?
No one said anything about selling a car without fixing its faults. The comment was simply most of the Rs4s common faults have now been addressed so if DRC has already been changed for coilovers he could be past the worst.
