that's because you are old

Same as launch control. Once you have used it once or twice for a bit of fun its absolutely no use to anyone.
I guess its good fun for the kids but not many kids buying new M5s

Re: RS6 C7 to NEW M5?
I don't think it's a case of everything else's better, just different.
Personally i do agree with DK but not that RWD is the be all & end all, but that it does & likely always will offer up a more involving driving experience. It will be interesting to see if this new wave of AWD with the ability to switch to RWD will be the nirvana that it promises.
As an example, in the 911 range the Turbo S is by far the quickest of the range & also offers up practicality, however the GT3/RS is the quicker on track, by a long way more dynamic but loses the rear seats & some creature comforts by compromise for this dynamic advantage. Is the GT3/RS better than the Turbo S is a debate that i guess 911 fans could ague all day long, but some (including myself) would choose the Turbo S as the GT3 is just too hardcore as a daily driver.
Pull this back to more general road cars & practicality becomes less of an issue as most are 4 door with sizeable boots, but the RS6 has an edge over the M5 as it's an estate, so if you need or prefer estates then the RS6 is the natural draw. That said, their's a huge difference in the way the 2 cars perform & as is fairly obvious in all but the best road/weather conditions the RS6 will have the performance advantage over the M5, but & to some it's a big but this can dumb down the driver experience as it makes the drive very predictable & not as involving given how composed the RS6 is. That's never going to be a bad thing & to some extremely important as you could factor that as being a far safer drive in all conditions.

Re: RS6 C7 to NEW M5?
Opinion divides as always. If I ran more than one car there would definitely be a RWD M or AMG in the mix. I don't so I need a one stop Shop and the RS really ticks almost every box going bar none. The forthcoming M5 and E63S really level this field which is great. Everyone always wants to own the 'best' or 'fastest' car! My old Z4M was a frantic thing and properly exhilarating. There was always the risk of it trying to put me into a hedge backwards which makes life interesting! BUT-who wants to drive like that all the time? In traffic my left leg was in bits as it's a heavy clutch and driving into places such as London was like doing one legged squats repeatedly. Car couldn't be driven slowly either as it was a B road blaster. Great car but I got my ass handed to me by a B5 RS4 who just pulled away with ease. My tuned M135i with the JB4 was a handful as well as all the torque kept trying to overwhelm the chassis.
We don't live in a dry country, I'm still on BMW forums and it's full of posts saying 'can't wait for it to be dry so we can drive our cars properly' which is just daft...in the RS it's all year round capable. Adversely these are the same people that when any RS product is mentioned you can bet the words 'boring' and 'understeer' are not far away. If every time you drive your car you had the yellow DSC light flashing at you as your car fishtails trying to find grip it gets frustrating. Exciting? Yes no doubt but then an AWD car just gets going and keeps going. Nissan GT-R? AWD. New NSX? AWD. The fact that M & AMG are offering AWD (albeit switchable) is very telling of what people want.

Re: RS6 C7 to NEW M5?

Totally
These two offer very different driving experiences for all different types of reasons.
It just depends what you want your car to do for you.
But for me,
Given a dry day/track - RWD FTW
Given a Wet Welsh B road in winter - quattro FTW

I did... only spun it once... lol
I wanted an M5 tbh - never had a BMW and the M5 (or 3) were a big draw... but as a family car I was concerned about traction with my lead foot (when on my own might I add) and general all year round use without nervousness of poor road conditions.
The itch is still there though tbh. Missis wants a 135i great for me - but I really don't want her to have one!

Re: RS6 C7 to NEW M5?
Can't disagree with any of those points Steve & yes you need to be aware of the conditions being driven in, but i can 100% state that even when pushing on in the M5 on road/track in less than perfect conditions i at no point ever felt it was trying to kill me as the chassis is so accomplished & you always know exactly where the car's positioned. Yes you may get a wiggle at the rear & no i never drove the car in the wet/cold with TC off (who would?), but i was only ever caught out once in over 3yrs of ownership & that was dropping a couple of cogs on a bone dry motorway approaching 3 figures. If you drove an RS6 at 10/10 in poor conditions then you'd still likely end up in all kinds of trouble as AWD is far from being the saviour of poor driving, however totally agree it does up the usability stakes.stevo55 wrote: ↑Thu Apr 27, 2017 9:38 amOpinion divides as always. I also agree & am very interested to see how this new wave of switchable AWD perform, as that really could mean they're the perfect all round vehicle & i'd be one of the first to doff my cap if they're as good as i hope/expect them to be.

Re: RS6 C7 to NEW M5?
R8 had switchable AWD, up to 80% to the rear....could still spin that car in the cold and wet no problem, even at low speeds...

Re: RS6 C7 to NEW M5?
GT-R is the same, although i believe it can send 100% to the rear. Most of the time it's RWD, only bringing the fronts into play for launches & certain other scenarios (can't recall what these are though).
