Going on a track day

Post by V8mark » Mon Apr 17, 2017 10:17 am

Hiya,

I'm going on a track day (Donnington) next month, does anyone have any tips (I'm a track novice)?

The only thing I was thinking of doing was to strip, clean and copper slip the brakes (cleaning the disc holes) all round.... obviously check all fluids too....

Do the standard pads hold up to track use, or shall I pop some DS2500s in there?

Any advice welcome

Cheers,

1990 Toyota Supra 3.0 T - de-cat, HKS Boost Controller (1.4 bar max), used as a daily drive for 110k miles on original turbo!
198x Granada 2.8i Ghia X - Can't remember the exact year - but a great car!

Don't stack it.

On a more serious note, there is a guide in the trackday section that's worth a read.

I'd look at upgrading your brake fluid from the OEM stuff as a priority.

I'm not sure what the OEM pads are like in the B8 so will let someone else comment on that.

Other tips; give the car a lap to warm up before driving full speed, and give it a cool down lap (or half lap at least) before coming back in. Don't put handbrake on while brakes are still hot.

Also, book some time with an instructor.

And have fun!

Eddie - Snap, we are doing the same evening session on the 18th

What are you guys driving?

I'm there with a few guys from work, we have a mix of cars a Z4 (35i), a 130 Beemer (2007), a new peugeot GTi (whatever the small one is these days), a 335d xdrive, and an R32. All novices, just decided to give it a go.

@FaisalJ - Doh, I didn't think about looking in the track day section..... what a :knob: .... LOL... I'll mooch over there later and have a look through.

I've booked a 1/2hr session with an instructor for some pointers about an hour in to give me a bit of time to get used to the track (and car) first. I've only had the car about a month so I'm still getting used to what it can do.

I did think about the brake fluid, I'll get it changed before the day. Probably a good policy anyway with such a heavy car those brakes must get pretty hot even during fast road use.....

I might have to think about a day off work on the 18th to join you guys!

Here are some ideas for fluid:

PhilT has a Trackpreped Renault Clio. And God only knows What Pule333 will bring. I'm sure he'll be along to tell all. I'm only a spectator but,and that's a but, I might either run my SQ5 or my A3 TDi around just for a laugh.

Faisal,

Thanks for the info on the brake fluid, I used Castrol SRF in my Supras and never had a problem, so I'll get some of that. Can't believe they still sell it! The supra had the same problem as the RS, too much weight when stopping from high speeds, used to cook the stock brakes. New pads, fluid and lines, no more problems.....

... go on ... put that holiday form in ... the sun is shining .......

Eddie,
bring the SQ5, I bet that would surprise a few people??

Lol. The SQ was due a service so I've booked it in for oil change, swap out all the brake fluid for Castrol Srf Racing and I'm having a full Geometry setup ( I can add a bit of neg camber on the rear) Hopefully I'll stay on the track and not go off-roading.

Why don't you come along in your porkchop doodle. I'll show you how the bus will ram you up the aRSe.

Going on a track day

Let's be honest. The bus wouldn't know where the porkchop had gone. The diesel's biggest weapon is the filthy exhaust plume.
