JC, thank you for that great, detailed reply. I was surprised when I was told that it would only be the two corresponding synchros being changed as well, as I would have thought change them allfor the hell of it on a 90k box, but maybe that's just me(and you)?

Shopp, not MRC's fault as far as I am concerned, it rests with the rebuilder, but he is the one that they chose to carry out the work so sadly it will rest with them to sort should I have a moan.

I still haven't had a chance to drive the car again, but I know exactly how it is going to feel sadly. Madam has been driving her all week and is still saying that 2nd/third shifting feel virtually no better :(.

Jon, thank you very much, you would be the closest person to me, so if it gets to the point where I have to try another box just to be sure, I will drop you PM and see if that is ok with you?

Do you know what they filled the gearbox with, I had the oil in mine changed as it had never been done, but I feel it doesnt shift as well'since, looking to drain it and try another oil soon
Part number quoted is - G052911A2 Google brings up a fair bit on that, but I expect that is what you put in the box already?

Mr Footlong, if you're not happy with your gearbox take it back. Tell them what's wrong and what your not happy about and get them to fix it properly this time. Comments like drive it a while as it might get better dont wash as a geabox either works or not, your's sounds link it does not work. You know your car and if you are not happy then take it back and don't accept it until you're happy.

We have put about 600 miles on the setup now and 4 different people have driven a good amount of miles in her and all of us pick up on 2nd/3rd still not feeling "right" compared with the rest of the box, feeling near-as-damnit the same as before the box was redone. While I have no doubt that 2nd/3rd gears/synchros themselves may well have been shot, I can't help but think that the linkages so to speak (selector forks etc mentioned in previous posts) are what is causing the continued poor feeling to 2nd/3rd.

My best friend borrowed her for the weekend, put over 250 miles alone on the new setup and said that it is just not really any different compared to before it was worked on.

We have a ton of stuff on at the moment so I can't drop everything and take her back yet, but I will speak to the guys and let them know that something still ain't right, thanks.

Don't leave it too long or put too many miles on it. Before long they will (quite rightly) be saying you could have caused it and that it was fine when it left them.

Do the linkages have any slack in them/adjustment? i.e between the gearstick and gearbox.

I've looked a numerous cars with sloppy gearchanges and most of them have been down to linkages, ball joints and seized selectors (outside the gearbox). Having said that the linkages will usually show a linear problem with the up/down and side to side motion - in other words on a H pattern gear stick 1st to 2nd and 3rd to 4th is fine is the forwards/backwards linkage is ok, but 3rd to second will be tricky if there is a problem with the side to side linkage.

One other thing you could try is rev matching/double de clutch to see if it makes a difference. That could indicate a synchro problem.

I actually do the double declutching/rev matching a lot once warm, when sport mode is enabled, well, I did before the box was pulled apart. I do it quite a lot just to make more sexeh blip down noise as much as engaging gears more smoothly :smile_smoking:. I will see when I can now I have put the run in miles down on her for the most part (I am being told 1000 miles but I believe 500-1000 miles run in is fine on a manual box, non?). When you do the same thing without sport mode, rev matching is a real flaff as MRC appear to dumb down throttle response heavily in normal mode to make their modified Sport Mode seem even more night & day different, the throttle response is far snappier/harder in sport mode.

The 2nd/3rd behaviour is worse when the gearbox is cold I believe from what everyone has said, but I have still not had tha chance to drive the car for more than a day at a time and even then, only 10 mile trips to/from the office..... I need to concentrate more on the feeling for slop etc, as I don't recall sideways slop really, I know exactly what you mean there.

Cheers,

Nick.
