Another one bites the dust
Re: Another one bites the dust
I've fortunately not directly encountered these scumbags yet but on a couple of occasions already I have been tailed, mainly by young lads in seats / golfs etc, but also by some cars I had bad feeling about, a transit van in particular. Hence I've driven past the house, few routes through estates and even to Tesco 24x7 to avoid them knowing where it's kept
Maybe I'm being paranoid! Doesn't sound like it now though!

Right boys, this guy is brilliant. We know he's got an alarm, a big dog and a blackjack. So the best option here is to get him on his driveway and force him to disable it just before we're ready to do this job. Now, on with the balaclavas chaps.

If that's aimed at me, what you think you know is horribly inaccurate!!bam_bam wrote:Right boys, this guy is brilliant. We know he's got an alarm, a big dog and a blackjack. Anyway, let's get back on topic...
Re: Another one bites the dust
...and now we know you don't have a big dog. All I know is what you have posted on a public forum.
Know your enemy.
Let's get back on topic. So, given what we now know, how do you deter/stop someone key jacking you on your driveway or when getting out of your car? Discuss.

Re: Another one bites the dust
Good question, to which i don't have an answer..
Re: Another one bites the dust
Long term the answer is that manufacturers need to be able to remotely disable a stolen car. This needs to be an integral part of the car like the immobiliser, and not a device that can be removed like an aftermarket tracker.
That will at least narrow the thefts down to only being useful for stripping down for parts.

Re: Another one bites the dust
Agreed but I'll just leave this here - http://www.jammerfromchina.com/categori ... t=priceasc - this would at least keep the car running in their control, for jobs or further movement.MikeFish wrote: ↑Wed Apr 12, 2017 11:12 amLong term the answer is that manufacturers need to be able to remotely disable a stolen car. The problem becomes cost and value, the car industry is very modular so replacing or cloning the disabling unit becomes viable to thieves. Yes it would make it harder for a while, but the whole VIN control hasn't stopped them, the barriers come down pretty quickly. With the value of a car versus a handset so far apart, the mobile phone analogy doesn't really apply here. Most opportunist phone thieves aren't dealing in £90K handsets. It just sounds really good as an elevator pitch - "block stolen cars like lost/stolen mobile phones", it sounds easy but it's also a myth. I can change a phone's IMEI number in minutes or I can clone the phone to BlackBerry spec IMEI (to run on BIS to gain access to a corporate network) or I can make the phone untraceable or unreachable. I can also change the donkeyguard number, the serial number, the list goes on. Considering that Google want to run cars with their OS, it'll get even easier but with cars! Bio-metrics are interesting but I still get chills from that time I was traveling and a barman said "best you take that Rolex off, the locals don't ask for things like that, they just take your hand with your watch".
I like the idea of one of these - https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B01M0QJ73Z?psc=1 Just pull the pin throw the keys and run. I'd say more often than not everyone else would run too. Imagine wasting time trying to disable or break it? I cannot imagine trying to drive a car with of those going off. I think the best thing is to create distance between you and the attacker. Using a defense torch could also work, or maybe Farb Gel spray.
No matter where you go, there you are.
Re: Another one bites the dust
Let's address some anti-surveillance with a few Top Tips:
Firstly don't get paranoid! However if you feel you're being followed:
1. Drive 3 sides of a square. Unless you're being followed by a professional surv team (unlikely when it comes to scumbag thieves) then they'll show out.
2. Make some random turns and see which vehicles follow you. If it's a busy route then there's always a chance others vehicles will turn the same way but on quieter streets if you keep seeing the same vehicle then that's a good indicator.
3. A great way of forcing a tail to show out is to do something alien to us RS drivers-go slow!! If you go slower then the flow of traffic will go past you and then a tail will show out big time.
4. Give yourself an out with escape options. Tyre and Tarmac rule when static (if you can see the bottom of the road wheels and a patch of road in the vehicle in front of you) then you can manoeuvre out and escape.
The other thing to consider is that you can do as much anti and Counter as you like but you have a start and a finish point. If they know either of those they can just wait for you to arrive/leave those points and hit you there.
Hopefully we should all know what the pattern of life is around where you live-same faces/cars etc etc. Anything different should 'in theory' stick out.
Well worth looking into defensive driving courses as well. You will have a fast powerful vehicle that can be used defensively and offensively!

Re: Another one bites the dust
Above is sort of what I did with the van. I went v slow and he stuck to my tail BUT being a transit I wasn't sure if that was him being a dick / possible thief or that the transit was a pile of <beep>.
Was tempted to just pull up and get out, As if I lived somewhere else and give him the "I know your game" look.
It's just tin though. Never know who your dealing with

A 'hard stare' is also a good bit of anti...just bear in mind that you could get the whole 'what the fck are you looking at' caper!!E14STO wrote:Above is sort of what I did with the van. As I said don't disappear in paranoia as then you start seeing potential thieves everywhere! Common sense prevails

Re: Another one bites the dust
I think genuinely people just follow for their love of the cars - had this day after day in the Nissan. People hanging out of windows videoing it and stuff. So it was really difficult to tell day to day.
The RS is so different in that respect it's now very noticeable when someone takes an interest.
I'd consider myself reasonably intimidating if need be but I have a family and car insurance so I wouldn't bother. I would never be tooled up (I got rid of my asp a long time ago.
) but they likely will be, and more than one.. flee over fight!

I can't even consider someone breaking in for the keys. I'd be devastated that they had intruded with my 3yr old in the house rather than the keys going..
