If you have stolen a black RS4 though it's much easier to find the reg nr of one with Internet search vs waiting on street corner for one to drive past?

Can't you just do a Hpi on the reg?
Are you sure a hpi check gives the current owners address?

I purchased a Golf GTI edition 35 last year. It was in the trader privately for 3-4 weeks, loads of pictures with the plate all over it. Within the first week of owning the car I had two parking tickets, both from overstays at motorway services. Managed to get out of it as you could visually see in the pictures it wasn't our car and we had proof we were at another location at the time. Not really any problems just an arse to sort out. I think the trader is targeted as you can pick, model, colour and age and you get a list of plates to choose from.

I think the problem people are not aware of these days is how iPhones etc take picture and stamp the location into the pictures data. You take a picture of your car send it to someone and they have your location. If you post the same picture online does it keep that data?

Yes. Be wary of iPhones putting GPS data in your photo. Some photo sharing sites will strip the EXIF data but some won't, including this one if you upload the photo.

If you take a photo with your phone then look in your album and it tells you where it was taken then you have geo-tagging turned on.

I never post a photo of mine with reg plate. Another problem is other people posting photos of your car. You have no control over that. I always change the reg of photos of U.K. cars that I post. Common courtesy innit.
