Aftermarket HU draining battery

Post by ArtofGrunt » Sat Mar 04, 2017 11:22 pm

Hi there

I recently purchased a 2002 RS6 Avant. Nice big solid car with a couple of niggly problems that i am slowly working my way through. One of the main problem was the GPS location on the RNS-d, checked the connection and tried another antenna but to no avail. Only option left was to ditch the RNS-d and look at alternatives, after some research i opted for the Alpine INE W987D and proceeded to crack on with fitting the kit. First up the supplied plug and play lead was faulty, replacement made the speakers pop really bad when ever the ignition was switched on or off then i found out the supplied lead was of the wrong type. The one i needed apparently used the speaker output of the HU and not the RCA output as i was told to use.

Now the unit is fitted and operational without any popping, the problem i now have is battery drain. The car will last about 2 - 3 days and then nothing. When i sit in the car with the key out the ignition i can hear static very slightly. Put the key in the ignition, the HU screen comes on and everything does and sounds as it should. When i take the key out the HU screen goes off but i can still hear some coming from the speaker very slightly.

Is there a known solution to this problem or am i gonna have to leave it in the hands of a local auto spark. I prefer to have a rough idea of what is happening before i leave my car with a 3rd party

Thanks in adance

Sounds like the amp is on all the time. You could check current pull using a multimeter on the Bose and HU to see which one is staying on.

I'm guessing that you've wired it in such a way that you've got a permanent 12V going where it should be a switched 12V.

What Shopp said. I had to re-wire my plug on the Kenwood cause it was doing this.

Thanks for the prompt replies. I disconnected the battery and used the multimeter, 0.08 draw but when i turn on the HU i am getting 0.83, take keys out ignition i am still getting 0.57. I deduce from this the Bose is switching on with the HU but not switching off when the keys are removed.

Any ideas as to why the Bose is remaining powered after the keys are removed?

I have the Bose remote turn on wired through the supplied plug and the antenna powered by the remote turn on wire coming out the headunit. I will take it to the auto spark tomorrow but at least i know what the problem is

Thanks for your help

See my post above. You've got to modify the aftermarket wiring.

With the B7 the Bose stays on after the engine is turned off for a while. Thinks it's half an hour if left unlocked and about 1 min after it's locked.

Fixed it. The supplied connector was taking a constant 12v feed from the loom and sending it straight to the Bose. Solution was to cut the constant 12v feed in the connector and take the Remote turn on feed from the back of the HU, split that between the Bose feed and the antenna. So much for plug and play solution from the connector supplier

Thanks for everyone input

That's the problem with the new site layout, you don't see post count.
Glad you've got it sorted and FON!

Sorry for the late reply.

I am unsure of the part number but if you ask any audio Shop for a connector make sure it is the one that goes into the speaker feed and not the RCA connectors. Both will work but the RCA one will pop the speakers everytime you switch the ignition on or off. You need to cut the wire going to the Bose and feed that into an switched ignition feed or the Bose will stay on all the time
