German Petrol

Post by Kev.S » Sun Jul 24, 2005 9:08 am

Just come back from a 2000 mile blast around Germany. The car felt so much better running on German petrol (Shell V-Power and Aral 100). Not only was it a lot sharper and both pulled better at low revs and accelerated quicker, but even returned 25.3 mpg at a steady 110 mph on a 300 mile autobahn thrash! The 99 octane seems to suit it.

Didn't spot another RS of any sort in the whole week- don't the Germans buy them? Did see two Carrera GTs, both British and both going for it- sounded fantastic.

An interesting story. In the 1980's Audi built rally engines in Germany, shipped them to the UK where they were installed in the cars. The first few engines blew up and they wondered why after all the testing in Germany that this should happen. They eventually analysed the fuel and found that the German fuel had less contaminents than the UK fuel. Nowadays Germany is at 99 Octane and we are at 97 Octane which, coupled with the fuel quality, would explain the difference.
