Exhaust fumes

Post by dave993cars » Thu Aug 11, 2005 5:08 pm

Hi people
Has anyone had problems with exhaust fumes in the car when standing idle, there is no smell when driving, it only happens when you stop at traffic lights or stand still for a few momments.

Another question, I have no headlamp washers working when the lights are on, is it possible the relay is U.S.

Thanks

Some people disconect the headlight washers to make removing the bumper easier or to save on water.

Update info:

If you have no gaps around windows, all the doors are shut, no missing seals with the aircon working set to recirculation, you should have no noticeable fumes entering the inside of the car.

The engine can exhaust quite a lot of fumes when cold or when ticking over stationery for long periods but this should not be over bearing. Rotten eggs describe some smells, but under certain conditions a very toxic smell (eye burning) this will be a US cat or fuel breathing system, check all breather pipes are tight and replace breather filter below inlet manifold also check all turbo compressor rubber pipes are tight, run on shell optimax to see if things improve, replace the cat as a last resort but not normally a problem.

Not normally broken but the washer water pumps can sticks, seizes in time with a strip down to free and re-grease should do the trick.

Hope this helps

Best

G
