Your opinion please

Post by poshtaxi » Tue Aug 09, 2005 9:26 pm

Hi not posted here since last year when I owned an RS4 (MM51 UJX) for a poultry 3 months  due to it being a lemon :x .

Anyway I have seen the prices of RS6's recently and it's got my heart making my head work overtime (remember that feeling!) and woud appreciate owners opinions on a few things.

1) I've read on the forum that some owners believe the RS4 is quicker
than the RS6. I'm sure a modded 4 would be but not like for like
surely?

2) Is the Avant as quick as the Saloon (Isn't it heavier).

3) I bought the RS4 after modding a 225TT to the hilt. I foolishly thought
that in buying an RS4 it would be a great car as standard and that
money would'nt need to be spent modding. The car was purchased on
finance and with it being far more thirsty than I imagined the cost of
repayment and fuel was plenty for my wage at the time. A few weeks
into ownership I related to owners feedback here on the weaknesses
of the RS4 like the gearbox (gear changes were like stirring soup),
brakes (the pads just melted after 30 mins keen driving) the clutch,
the suspension travel etc. etc The car was sold buy an audi main
dealer with warped discs and the car was back at dealer after 7 days.
A month later and the clutch went. Got the car back and after 45 mins
of old codger like driving the car would'nt get into any gear other than
4th. Apparantly the mechanic who did the clutch did'nt do a good job of
linking clutch to gearbox. We wanted the dealer to take the car back
from us and walk away but they said as they had done all work under
warranty they were'nt obliged to. We sold the car back to dealer and
lost £3K

Do RS6 owners think that a standard 6 would pose similiar woes?

4) I would be looking to buy a 6 which is over 3 years old as I've lost an
embarassing amount of money in buying newish cars and on finance
which is a double shafting. Problem is though I would be very
reluctant to buy any high performance/ costly maintenance car which
is out of warranty. However do you feel the warranty is worth it
anyway (on a standard car)

5) Can an inspection carried out by AA/ RAC etc. tell whether a
standard or modded car has been thrashed. Members here can be
very helpful with cars they've experience of but what about those who
are not on the radar?

6) I love Audi cars but the prices of some of the previous shape M5 are
very appealing when compared with RS6. In various magazine
reviews and tests I've read over the years the M5 has pipped the RS6.
What do you unbiased lot think of the M5 ( the extra
boot space in the Avant does not count)!

Your opinions would be appreciated. Thanks :)

okey poke then...cant answer any questions in relation to the rs4 comparision, but would say the two are differnet cars so other than them carrying big loads where necessary, size of engine /car mean they handle very different and drive more so...

drive a couple of each to see..

as for warranty? never buy one without is all i can say. its absolutely impreritive that you buy a car with one, as without, every trip to the garage will be very expensive indeed.

i had an xjr out of warranty and the gearbox melted..3500 to fix.
i had an e39 m5 out of warranty and whilst nothing major went, it cost minimum 500 quid every time it went in, vanos etc....i owned it for 8 months and spent 3000 just keepig it in trim...money i would have saved with a warranty in both cars.

kind of spoiled both ownerships.

as for comparing m5 vs rs6? well i've owned both cars, and can say that the m5 is absolutely superb, in every single respect. rapid, smooth, handles superbly etc...

down side is its an older car, and thats about it. You can buy a good m5 with good spec and dealer warranty for 25 grand easy, and you will not be disappointed one bit...

simply a choice thing..

i rate the rs6 very highly indeed as its more of an all rounder for my style of driving, as i dont drive track my cars and there are very very few times in the real world where i would prefer to be in an m5...

but to be honest? when the time comes, the m5 is the car to have!!

you pay your money and you take your choice!!!!

either way, there both outstanding cars, and i have an rs6 now cos its just exactly what i need. Fast, comfortable, easy to drive in all conditions, and has all the room i could ever need as i have a baby en route...

a baby carrier that nails pretty much anything when i need it to with kudos in spades...

nothing else out there for me right now (e55 is excellent also, but just looks very very dull in comparison!)

finally? good luck and enjoy the process of finding out for yourself !!

lotsd have been hammered by owners with no respect, and some (like all of mine!) have been used the way it says on the tin, and looked after in a manner that you would expect!!

aa/rac probably wont be able to tell you anything.. wheels, tyres/ interior and stone chips are always gie aways to me!

intuition and common sense are the key!
