Looking to buy, a bit of info please.

Post by gilford » Thu Oct 13, 2016 1:35 pm

Afternoon all,

been away from the Audi fold for a few years now (M4 and currently a Cayenne GTS) but looking to get in to an RS6 I think.

I'm guessing the facelift 2015 is the best one to go for but apart from the lights what are the differences?

Prices, vary MASSIVELY, what should someone be paying for a decent 2015 car with sub 20k miles?

Cheers

It is really a minor difference between the facelift and pre facelift.
If the older lights dont bother you i would go with the cheaper version and put the money on mods or something :D

Don't overlook the major reduction in Road Fund Licence with the FL car, or the improved Infotainment system. Yes, the older car is very similar, but the FL brought a number of worthwhile enhancements.

I would go facelift if you can. I bought new in 2015 and oohed and aahed about a used pre-facelift. What swung it for me was the matrix lights - I think the earlier LED versions have aged badly and make the car look dated. Normal lights look better but not so good to use. If you go DRC (I would advise you do) make sure it is silent over bumps - some cars, including mine, have had revised dampers (introduced July 2016) retro fitted all round to stop rattling. Media are better, and I like alacantara door cards FL too, but otherwise not much difference other than external styling tweaks - although who knows what tweaks Audi have done under the skin? Last, but not least, I suspect market will always pay premium for FL in future years - but you will pay more now so swings and roundabouts.

Pre face lift lights are the meanest and make the 6 "look" like a 6.

Facelift lights may perform better but make the car look like billy bog standard chip pan fat burning rep mobile S line.

All in my opinion of course.

Not that you're biased!

Matrix headlights are fantastic, and the other FL updates make it well worthwhile. Pre-FL lights are ghey.

Exactly - we all like different things. But Pistonheads editorial seem to agree that earlier Audi lights have not aged well. Albeit much better on RS and presume they are talking about even older version.

"Our original poster was sitting behind an L320 Range Rover Sport when he realised how badly it had aged. Others have mentioned the Audi A5s and A6s with the early LED DRLs that have been compared to cheap after-market kits from Halfords or garden centre 'rope lights'. What cars do you think haven't aged well?"

The sweep lights swung it for me. Plus could get a good discount which made it silly not to go for new -v- 6 mths old one. get to spec it how I wanted it. lovely.

There seems to be between £3-5k difference between 2014 pre FL and 2015 FL cars, it would be interesting to see if the same price difference is reflected in the CAP guide?

The RS6 will be the biggest "car" I've owned, is it a huge thing being an A6 estate?

It was the sweeping lights that did it for me too! I agree, the lights in general look more modern (and as as a result, the earlier car looks dated as a result).

Would be interesting to drive an older and newer car back to back. There are a few members who have certainly owned both pre and post facelifts. Don't underestimate the little changes they make over MY, as if you keep the car the full 3 years you may find the benefits.

For example, the older cars didnt have douuble glazing - that was brought it because wind noise was considered unacceptable for this time of car. You'd never notice unless you do spend more time with both cars, but nevertheless i'm glad the FL has double glazing!

Double glazed, thats amazing, who would of thought there would be a need for that!

What options are classed as the "must haves"?

I just bought a facelift RS6, made some concessions to get there, but pleased I did. Went for facelift as IMO it looks a little better with the lights and their shape, but really not a huge amount in it. It saves £250 a year in tax, so that might make a difference depending on how long you own it. Generally when cars have a facelift on lights it does start to impact the value of the older cars (thinking when BMW introduced the angel eyes lights), but you will probably still be out of pocket right now.

As far as I was concerned:
Absolute must haves: dynamic pack (DRC suspension), sports exhaust (although it can be retrofitted), parking advanced (so you have a reverse camera given the size of the car), 21 inch alloys, privacy glass
Nice to have: black/aluminium/carbon pack so that you get the Quattro grill, Pano-roof, Surround camera for parking, ceramics (doesn't seem to impact second hand value much depsite being such an expensive option, but is rare and early ones had a recall), adaptive cruise control
Additions that also help: Advanced key (although it is keyless start, so it just for getting in), HUD (although the drivers display does make this less useful), Audi Connect / Smartphone interface, B&O sound system (depending on how important this is for you), Active lane assist (depending on whether there are going to be motorway miles), Alcantara headlining (had this on my C6 and really miss it).

Hey, even with the most basic spec, it is still a great car!

If you don't mind me asking how much did you pay for yours?

It's always good to hear actual SOLD prices and not asking :biggrin3:
