Little test as being done by the RS4 boys

Post by tartan_rob » Thu Jul 21, 2005 4:11 pm

Pick a flat as possible piece of road and respect the speed limit at all times...

From cruising at 2k revs, nail the throttle in 3rd, at 3k revs start timing, stop at 6k revs. Here is what I get...

temp was 26degC, very uneven road, slightly uphill - not much.
cruising at 2040 revs, floored it, 9.59secs later I hit 6000rev exactly.
WOT from 2k revs, timing from 3040 to 6k revs = 6.87secs
max air flow = 267.28gps, max 462.8Nm torque

How does that compare with your "younger" and slightly less "used" car?

Hi Rob,

Prefer the FATS test which is 4200 -> 6500.

Do RS4's not have slightly different gearing to the S4 as well?

Cheers,

yes, RS4 3rd and 4th are slightly lower than S4 to make up for the fact they have no torque. What does an RS4 do it in?

so as the gear ratios are different the test between S4 and RS4 is different anyway. Just out of interest - what speed does the RS4 4th gear run out? 3rd on the S4 is approx 110mph

If I remember rightly (and I could be wrong), 3rd on an RS4 runs out at about 90.

3rd on my RS4 runs out at just under an indicated 100mph- say approx 97mph and then I hit rev limiter which shows about 7300revs. Must admit I have not tried this in 4th and only did it in 3rd shortly after I got the car and was getting used to it. It got there so fast it caught me out!! Now I change gear before I get there :bash:

And yes the test for RS4's was done in 4th gear from 3000-6000revs. Mine clocked 7.5 sec for a Stage 1 car. Doesn't really take off though until over 3000 revs. In third it would be quite another matter :bigblink:

Last week I tried this twice (4th gear) but had a bit of trouble with traffic. I estimated my time as being around 10s. So at the time I thought maybe I hadn't done it right, but now I really suspect my clutch...

Tried it again using VAGCOM on group 3 and got 12.92s
Road was not ideal (a bit uphill + curved) but still a lot more than the RS4 test.
However I could tell the car was struggling towards 6K so it certainly exposes the differences in turbo capacity.
