HUD

Post by bedlamater » Sat May 21, 2016 12:00 pm

Is it worth it? Had a nightmare with my order so now buying a stock vehicle but few seem to have HUD in the options combo I am looking for.

I had it in my x5 and used it a lot, but that car didn't provide much information on the dash, no 7in screen like the A6 so thinking that may negate the need for the HUD?

Any opinions greatly appreciated.

Thanks

I have mine arriving on Tuesday with HUD. What was blatantly apparent from driving the rs6 over my current cars (c250 and r350) was how blisteringly fast the speed hapoens. In a "normal" car you have time to glance around but perhaps less time in the RS. Add to that the other info and I thought it made sense. Obviously a bit of a toy too.

Personally I don't like it as it means you have that horrid piece of dash, something else that will freak. It's not a must have IMO.

Love it. It is so much easier to keep an eye on your speed with the HUD than the dash, and this is a car where you need to keep track of your speed to avoid points. IMO it's a must-have.

It's also easy to lose track of whether ACC or land assist are engaged - the HUD gives you a quick visual on both.

Yes, it's a clumsy install by Audi, but I never notice it nowadays and the benefit far outweighs the slight downer of having an interrupted dash line.

I think you only rely on it once it's there. I've never not known what speed I'm doing or whether ACC is on.

Meh sums it up.

Yep. It's a great option.

Dash install is not quite as cohesive as it was in my 330d / X5 but to be honest I don't mind in the slightest. The information is clear and easy to read and ensures you are 100% focused on the road. It is now one of my must-have options when specifying a new car. :thumb:

Thanks for the replies. Do radio and telephone numbers/functions come up on the HUD?

Only in the early C7 marketing materials!

The only things displayed are: current speed, current speed limit (if you have that option), navigation instructions, ACC and Lane Assist information.

Also, in Lap Timer mode: oil temperature, current gear and gearbox mode, and rev change up indicator (when in Manual mode).

I think that's everything,

That helps me a lot wildbore, i use mine of in the x5 for phone and radio the most, then speed.

On another quick note, what's the voice command like, any good?

It's OK, not great. I only use it for phoning and navigation. The latest Audis (not the A6 C7, sadly) have a vastly improved voice control that is much more useful when playing media. I have this fantasy where Audi upgrade the A6 to the new version as part of an MMI update, but I am not holding my breath.

One good thing is being able to do an online Google search using voice control. I have used that a few times and it works very well. For example, you set off for a restaurant only knowing roughly where it is. It would be a pain to program the nav whilst driving, so you just say "Online search The Hand and Flowers" and it takes you there.

Just bear in mind the HUD does seem to disappear when the sun is out and you are wearing sunglasses so it should be OK for the uk summer

I only found out a couple of months after having the car if you have the cluster in track timer mode you get shift light appearing on the hud near the red line. Also get a boost gauge on the lower cluster.

I love the HUD now!!

I'm a big HUD fan, had one on my M6, M5, RS6 and I missed it for awhile when I bought the 911 after the RS6. However I do agree with doodle's comment. I'd become very used to having a HUD and kept looking for it for a couple of weeks with the 911 but when I was test driving M3/4s recently it had become a novelty again and I kept ignoring it in favor of the dials. Basically it is a cool feature, but not essential and apparently the factory making them has been wrecked by an earthquake so you can't buy a new car with one currently. I'd specced one on my C63 and have been told I might have to wait until next year to get a pretty guaranteed delivery of a car with one.

One last thing - I struggled to switch between a HUD car and a non-HUD car. I had temporarily lost the ability to glance at the dials and just "know" what speed I was doing when I used the HUD car as a DD.

Polarised sunglasses? Mine make it very difficult to see when it's sunny (or at least when I've got my shades on 8) )
