Deposit down, sepang blue performance arriving next week!!

Post by SimonR » Wed May 18, 2016 12:56 pm

Hi all,
Finally bitten the bullet and gone for a sepang blue performance edition.
I'm having it debadged as I don't want to make too much of a statement.
I'm concerned about theft, both on the driveway and while driving and have read a few horror stories on here about them going missing. A real problem or me just focusing on the bad?

Pictures to follow!!

I had my A5 stolen last year so can understand your paranoia! It's not the RS6 that is a problem, but its starting to become part of the terrority with any 'decent' car, especially as EU law has helped thieves steal cars through the open OBD ports.

Being stolen off the drive is no problem for me as my RS6 is parked on the street. Little did i know that they don't need your key!

As with anything, it's really about making yourself not look like being worth the hassle. This could be everything from CCTV, to "Watch out for the Dobermans" Sticker on the front door, to installing a collapsable post in your driveway to block the car in.

On the flipside, the question you have to ask yourself when it comes to the car being stolen from your home is that, do you really care about the car? Given they are brazen enough to break into your home, are you willing to put your family at risk? Them nicking your car key from the kitchen table is at least unobstrusive and unthreatening!

Anyway, i'll tell you what i'm doing:
- Removing RS6 badge (actually ordered them to be deleted but didn't happen!)
- Front window tint (looks better, but makes windows effectively smash proof)
- OBD has been put inside dash (currently it is completely open just to the FHS of your steering column), but will need to be undone for any service

Again, on the flipside i could ask myself why am i bothering. A thief may not be able to steal my car, but they can cause a lot of damage attempting to! The question is whether i'd rather this, or simply get my car stolen and get a shiny new one. I

the laminated glass in the fl cars front windows is effectively smash proof anyway - tints won't make much difference to them. Look better though !

Did you specify the repositioning of the OBD at factory build or is this something your getting done after?

No, i just used a car audio guy i know to unclip the dash and then zip-tie the OBD underneath. It took 10 mins.

I know the Audi Viper car alarm package from Secure MY Car will disable the OBD port when the alarm is on.
Quote:
The system is designed to work completely independently to the factory system and most importantly immobilises the OBD and the engine independently making it almost impossible for the thief to steal your car with out keys
http://www.securemycar.co.uk/Audi-stole ... wheel.html

This is relating to the old RS4 but I think the same will apply to newer Audis too. I spoke to the guy previously about getting one of these alarms installed with remote start but he couldn't do it without having to the leave a spare key (the immobiliser bit rather than the actual key itself) in the car. I'm not comfortable with that even though it will probably provide a better immobiliser, and I'm not sure how well that will work with the OEM keyless start.
But, if you are not interested in remote start and are worried about OBD port issues then this could be a very good 'invisible' solution.

Great choice. I got my Sepang blue 2 weeks ago. What add on's do you have?

10 days before we had our 2nd attempted break in in 6 months. Police are certain it was for car keys RS4 and SQ5 on driveway. Even with a locked gate the police reckoned they would just ram it -adds to the fun. I am going to buy a steering wheel to brake lock to slow them down if they ever get the car keys. The downside is the other half is freaking out that its my interest in cars thats causing the problem.

The RS6 is lovely though!!!

If they have the car keys won't they also have the key to the steering wheel lock?

My plan is to put the wheel lock key on my house keys. I never go out in the car without them and they come to bed with me. If they get in and get the car keys the house alarm will be triggered (we always put that on) but there is at least a chance the delay is enough to allow the police to get there. Even better if on looking through the car window it puts them off trying (but really they will probably assume the keys are with the car keys).

I've just had quote to add CCTV. Police were keen on it but admitted that it is not much of a deterrent in town as the scum even wave and moon at cameras but helps the police even if faces are covered to see sizes trainers etc.

Not heard of heat sensitive spot lights. any links? I have been told to look at perimeter sensors which trigger an alarm before they start attacking the doors and windows. Depressing really.

I've got

Steering wheel lock

Bollard(telescopic into ground)

Tracker

Keys don't get left downstairs

Spare set not on my property

Of course....you could end up like Eddie with someone jumping from behind a wall with a blade or gun when your parking up?

Il await the "it's insured" "just let them take it" but I'm afraid il do as much as I can to prevent it within my power....just the way I've been brought up...worked hard and no scum is going to retake it from me without a fight.

Hopefully my deterents will make them move on to a easier target?

When that happens I will probably give up. I've had beautiful cars (and a few dogs) for 25 plus years and only once a bit of vandalism once. You are right make your gaff less attractive- the problem is the cars we like are more attractive to the scum than the neighbours.
