Is Revo any good?
Is Revo any good?
I have a 2001 model stock S4 that I am thinking about getting remapped. Of any of you guys have the 315bhp REVO remap & if so, is it any good?
I like the idea of being able to revert back to normal if necessary and not having to solder EPROMS, etc.

RE: Is Revo any good?
Matt,
Loads of posts on here regarding Revo. I had the 5 hour trial which to be honest felt very aggressive/good but when it was looked in to they were running me very lean with a lot of boost and on a high milage 2001 S4 could be trouble for the turbo's. Correct me if wrong but you can't revert back to stock settings unless you buy their SPS modules (£££££) so you're looking at the best part of £1k for a generic remap. Have a look through the forum and give MRC a shout and at £500.00 all in for a CUSTOM map you can't go far wrong mate.

I had the Revo installed at Dialynx and after a few teething problems (intermittent loss of power around 4100 rpms which Dialynx fixed by making the settings a little less aggressive), its now working well and feels smooth and very powerful when you get to around 3500 - 4000 rpm. Its probably not as progressive as the AMD remap (the Revo power seems to come in in one big smile-inducing slug) but I am very happy with it.

Revo in my opinion is good but also aggressive and you very much get no spinning straight to max spin...I like that but its not too everyone's taste. The SPS dongle is nice and allows you to increase and decrease the fuelling + timing and boost but as said above it is about £250 (but has a nice immobiliser option - hours of entertainment when friends or wife wants to go somewhere in a hurry and the car won't start...!)....If I had thought and not been so impetious then I'd have gone to MRC....but other than the way the power is delivered they are all much the same when you looking at the max power etc...

I liked Revo on my previous car, so revo will be going on the S4 too.
You can adjust the revo map's quite a lot with an SPS dongle, by setting the boost lower, and playing with the timing, its possible to make it considerably more progressive, and if you don't want to spend money on an SPS dongle, there is the unsupported lemiwinks software which can run on your laptop, and be used to adjust some of the settings. (use with care).

The turbos are not a strong point on these cars, and by running aggressive boost/timing the life span of the small K03 is shortened a lot.

My advice is to tread carefully before getting any remapping done. As has been pointed out, raising the boost levels will reduce the lifespan of your turbos. To what span noone knows 'cos it depends on many other factors. So if you have already done a lot of miles, you may just blow your turbos and face a much bigger bill. The same is true if your engine is not healthy. For example if your DVs are leaking slightly then you may not know. Raising the boost would then not be a great idea.
AFAIK Revo are still providing chipping "at the customer's risk". I.e. they assume your car is healthy.
Certain other tuners take a different approach and check your car out first to confirm it is healthy. Clearly this will cost you more.
I'm trying to stay netural here, but have to point out a few recent threads which demonstrate the risks associated with tuning. When it goes well it's great. But when things go wrong it can be a nightmare.

Well said Dippy,
I tried to get Mihnea to run more boost on my B5 and he refused as it was detremental to the cars health.

Before I had my REVO done the car had been to AMD who had given it a once over, changed the MAF and told me the car was healthy. And then when I had the REVO done by Dialynx I had the DVs changed to Forge ones. Wouldnt have got it done without knowing things were ok.

yeh..surely its owners preorgative to get the car checked out, and ensure its healthy...Revo for the most part franchise out the mapping of cars to their dealer network, and each dealer I've met has had a copy of vagcom or a VAG 1551 machine, so is able to read and check fault codes etc before mapping, and most would be equipped to carry a proper checkout of the car to look for obvious signs that all is not right should the owner ask.jonno1 wrote:Before I had my REVO done the car had been to AMD who had given it a once over, changed the MAF and told me the car was healthy. I think in such a situation where Revo do franchise the installations out, they can't be expected to enforce all dealers do a servicing before hand. - and in not doing so they leave it up to the dealers to offer value added services.
thanks
