Mixing front / rear tyres?

Just had a flat tyre last night and need my car back in service pronto. The earliest delivery for the same tyre is end of the month from my dealer, but they are offering 2 Pirellis for the front in a few days instead (that aren't cheap).

Has anyone mixed front/rear pairs and is it wise on a quattro?

Ideally you want same on all 4 but won't make a great deal of difference. I suspect the delay is that the dealer will try and source the "RO1" tyres which are specific to our car from Conti, Dunlop and Pirelli. Same tyres in pairs front and back should be fine but I'd got for Michelin MPSS if I was changing.

The simplest way to explain is that each different tyre brand and also tyre tread pattern will create a different driving characteristic, the effect of Quattro would minimise different levels of grip in terms of acceleration however you will have an imbalance, and lateral grip an even higher imbalance as well us under braking hard.

How much you would feel would depend on how hard you were driving the car but personally I wouldn't on a performance car.

Also probably wouldn't touch Pirellis, not that well priced and performance in all areas isnt the best for RS's. General consensus is Michelin (1) or Goodyear (2) on here.

Turns out I can get one (of the Contis) from the UK shipped over in a few days, so will just have to wait. Narrow roads + luxobarge + oncoming idiot traffic forcing me onto rocks don't mix well. Tyres were only a month old but at least managed to get a run down to Monte Carlo done on them last weekend.

Might order a set of the Michelins online so that I don't have to go through this pain of waiting as inevitably I'll have another one go soon enough. Dealer quoted £440 per tyre for the Michelins (and that's supposedly with the UK VAT removed and Jersey tax added on). Jokers.

Assuming you have the 21s:
Tyreleader have the R01 Contis in stock for £248 if you want a matching tyre.

Personally I'd ditch them and go for the Michelins at £273 inc VAT (a bit cheaper than Zebede's mate) . I've seen them cheaper before when places are doing special deals.

Thanks for the pointer to Tyreleader but they (like quite a few others) won't ship to Jersey
