dropping headliner
dropping headliner
Hi folks,
just noticed this weekend that the headliner is starting to part and droop quite a bit, has anyone had this happen before and if so any recommendations on a remedy/fixer ?

Re: dropping headliner
Not heard of this happening on the RS6 but I'm guessing it's a mighty pain to remove and replace tidily. I've got to do the same on another car and I was going to try to use some 3M spray mount to stick it back.

Re: dropping headliner
My thoughts exactly that it will be a pain in the arse, i'm hoping i might be able to get to it via a interior light fixture. These things are sent to test us they say!

Re: dropping headliner
There was an RS6 owner in Japan that had this problem, turns out a previous owner would outrun cops on the freeways with the sun roof open... as you do.
No matter where you go, there you are.
Re: dropping headliner
I gotta go to Japan.

Re: dropping headliner
Yes mine is sagging too, near enough all of the fabric above the driver!
I will be interested to know how you get on. From my research, my plan is to use steam and a roller to melt the glue and stick it back on.

Re: dropping headliner
Steam roller seems a bit extreme.

Re: dropping headliner
Interesting. I'm convinced that high humidity causes the headlining to drop, so maybe the steam will work to put it back on. Just had a look on Amazon and you can get a steam cleaner that looks like the one in the video for about 30 quid up. I think I'll give it a go.

Re: dropping headliner
OK from the area above the drive a couple of weeks ago it is now much worse, so I had a go today.
Steam did not work, I tried an iron and that did not work. So without much left to loose I used some contact adhesive, gained access through the vanity mirror light (the other fixings have metal surrounds) not ideal but good for a spray and pray. Got a good chunk of it stuck but also got too much in one area and it came through. So OK as a tidy but need to take the headliner out of the car, remove it all and restock knowing how much adhesive is in each area to do it properly.
I have attached a couple of photos of the before.

Re: dropping headliner
I wonder if the steam doesn't work because it's alcantara and you can't get enough heat transfer through to the glue underneath.
I wonder if it's worth trying with a hot roller. Or a butchered hair straightener or something.

Re: dropping headliner
Tried steam on the other car (Jag) and it didn't work. Apparently with the Jag, the foam substrate rots with excess humidity (of which there is generally lots in the sieve Jag) - it's not the glue that comes unstuck.
At least for the Jag I can get a "new" one for £130. I suspect that for the RS6 it's going to be more like 2k.
I think for the RS6 it's going to involve removing the headliner and resticking it with a high temperature spray contact adhesive. At least the Alcantara is robust and the glue won't show through it.
